Winkelman
December 7, 1933 – November 5, 2023
On November 5th Joan E. Winkelman passed away peacefully at Heritage Hall in Leesburg Virginia. Joan was born in Washington DC and raised in Arlington, Virginia. She graduated from Western Mayland College. After graduating she married Barry A. Winkelman, an Army officer and pilot. After Barry's passing in 1964, Joan married Elbert (Mac) Fowler in 1970 to whom she remained married for 10 years.
Joan was known for being a very active senior in her retirement. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and bowling. She loved going to water aerobics every week for decades.
She was also a big baseball and football fan. She was happy to see the Washington Nationals win the world series and the Washington Redskins win the super bowl 3 times.
Joan participated in volunteer work throughout Loudoun County including volunteering at the library, helping wilth the Census, helping at the voting polls, working at Wolf Trap and Reston Hospital.
She was a fixture in Sterling Park and she will be missed.
Joan is survived by her sons Don and Bill Winkelman, Bill's wife Val Winkelman and Val's children Mike Darling and his children and Steve Darling and his children. She is also survived by Don's children Dan Winkelman and Lyndie Collins, great grandchildren Seth and Zoey, and Step Granddaughter, Ashley Hines. She is also survived by stepchildren Edie, Peggy, Sari, and Mat Fowler along with their children and grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by her husband Captain Barry A Winkelman, husband Mac Fowler and grandson Sam Winkelman.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd.,NE., Leesburg, VA 20176 where a service will begin at 11:00 am.
Joan will be buried alongside Don and Bill's father, Barry Winkelman, at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) or other Alzheimer and Dementia charities.
