Leesburg, Virginia — Major John T. Carrig, Jr. (U.S. Army, Retired), age 93, died
December 29, 2016 at Morningside House of Leesburg.
A beloved uncle "Jack" is survived by: his sister-in-law, Shirley Carrig, of Goode,
Virginia, his nephews and nieces, Stephen J. Carrig II of Arlington, Virginia;
Catherine Root of Penn Valley, California; Shaun Carrig of Reno, Nevada; and
Margaret Hein of Palmer, Alaska. He also leaves behind grand nephews and
nieces: Matthew Watkins of Lakeside, California; Maureen Fulkerson of Aldie,
Virginia; Tara Horton of Anchorage, Alaska; Michelle Roberts of Hickam AFB,
Hawaii; Clay Hein of Seattle, Washington and Patricia Carrig of Arlington, Virginia.
As well as great-grand nephews, Messick, Cavan, Hunter and great-grand
niece, Luna.
Major Carrig entered on active duty in the U.S. Army Air Forces in April 1943
and retired from the U. S. Army in March 1964 after over 20 years of honorable
service. During his distinguished military career, Mr. Carrig served in WWII campaigns
(Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe) and Korean War campaigns
(UN Defensive, and the Chinese Communist Intervention, 1st UN Counteroffensive
and the CCF Spring Offensive).
Major Carrig's decorations include: Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge, WWII
Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal 4 stars, United Nations Service Medal and
Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
Jack was an avid military historian and published author with many articles appearing
in the Army magazine and military unit newspapers.
Those closest to Jack knew him to be a quiet, unassuming man greatly loved by
his family. He was a true patriot to the country he loved and served.
A service will be held at Fort Myer Chapel on May 30th at 10:45am followed by
a burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
