John V. Cuddy, a retired Navy Captain and retired member of the Senior Executive Service died on December 2, 2010. Captain Cuddy was born in New Haven, Connecticut on 2 February 1937 to Harold W. and Margaret J. Cuddy. He attended grammar school and high school in New Haven before entering Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with the class of 1958. Upon reaching his twenty first birthday, he applied for and was accepted into the Naval Aviation Cadet program and began flight training in Pensacola Florida in February 1958. He completed flight training and assignments on land, at sea and overseas that lasted over 27 years. During that series of assignments he received a BS degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in California, attended the Royal Navy's Staff College in Greenwich England, received his MBA in Finance from the George Washington University and graduated with distinction from the United States Air Force Professional Comptroller's Course at Maxwell Air Force Base. Captain Cuddy flew Anti-submarine warfare aircraft in his first two flying tours but had command of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron Thirty at NAS Alameda California in the mid 1970's and was the model manager for the Navy version of the DC-9 aircraft. His educational background suited his shore assignments with a succession of financial tours with senior Navy staffs in Washington, DC where he retired in 1985. After two years in the private sector he responded to an advertisement for a Senior Executive Position and was selected as the Deputy Surgeon General for Resources/Comptroller at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery where he presided for the next 18 years - retiring a second time in 2006.
Captain Cuddy is survived by his wife of 30 years. Mary Francis, his children of a first marriage, John Jr. of California and Stacy Lynn Hansen of Portland, Oregon, six granchildren and his brother Harold W. Cuddy, Jr. of Hamden, Connecticut.
Funeral Services for Mr. Cuddy will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 starting at 1:00 p.m. at Ft. Myer Chapel. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery.
