John William "Jock" Pumphrey, Jr. passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at his home in Leesburg. He was 94 years old. Mr. Pumphrey was born March 7, 1917 near Leesburg and was the son of the late Mary Catherine Herndon and John William Pumphrey, Sr.
Mr. Pumphrey was the owner of Jock's Exxon in Leesburg. He began work at that location in 1937 and remained there until his retirement in 2003, except for time out for service during World War II. Immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor Mr. Pumphrey enlisted in the United States Navy, where he saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Following the war he returned to Leesburg and worked for L.S. Hutchison managing both the South King Street and West Market Street locations. He purchased the West Market Street location from Mr. Hutchison in 1965. The business remains in the family.
Mr. Pumphrey was active in local government serving on Leesburg Town Council from 1959 to 1974. While serving on the town council two major accomplishments during his tenure were the acquisition of the current Leesburg Executive airport and obtaining a permanent source of water for the community from the Potomac River. Prior to that, the town relied on wells for its water source. He was also a member of the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Department serving as chief engineer from 1948 to 1960.
Mr. Pumphrey was a member of the Leesburg Host Lions Club where he was honored in 1999 for 50 years of perfect attendance. He held most of the club's offices and was president in 1957-58 and was named the Melvin Jones Fellow in 2000. In 2001 Mr. Pumphrey was awarded the Good Scout Award by the National Capital Area Council Boy Scouts of America. He was also an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Pumphrey was a member of St. James Episcopal Church where he and his wife Ruth Alice Orrison were married on August 17, 1950.
In addition to his wife three sons, John W. Pumphrey III and James L. Pumphrey both of Leesburg and Jerry O. Pumphrey of Richmond, survive him. Two granddaughters and four grandsons also survive him. Three sisters, Virginia Doll, Mary Moody and Rose Manuel predeceased him.
Friends and family are invited to the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd. NE, Leesburg, Virginia on Monday, August 29, 2011 between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. for a time of visitation. Leesburg Host Lions Club will have a service starting at 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 14 Cornwall St. NW, Leesburg, Virginia 20176 on Tuesday, August 30 at 10:30 a.m. with interment in Union Cemetery; the Reverend John Ohmer officiating. Pallbearers are David Pumphrey, John Pumphrey IV, Tripp Pumphrey, Tyler Pumphrey, Richard Herndon and Sam Orrison. Honorary pallbearers include Leesburg Host Lions Club,Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company, Larry Hutchison, George Hunt, Gary Pommier, Dave Ashby, Richard Hill, Jim Clem, Whitney Jackson, Tuffy Furr, J. Hamilton Lambert, Clagett "Skeeter" Moxley, Lester O. "Dude" Moxley, Jimmy Kidwell, Stilson Greene, Terry Titus.
