In Loving Memory of John Michael Kelly

John Michael Kelly, a man of unwavering dedication and an unwavering love for his family, passed away on October 12, 2023, at the age of 81 having returned to the serene embrace of the Virginia countryside.  He was surrounded by the warmth of his loving family during his illness and passing. Michael was born on July 2, 1942, in Norfolk Virginia, to his proud parents, John Curtis and Betty Kelly.

His early childhood and teenage years were spent with his parents and 5 siblings following his dad's naval career.  His personal journey as a young man began with his induction into the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a degree in Engineering and enjoyed the development of friendships that would last a lifetime.  In 1966, upon graduation, he entered the United States Marine Corps and shortly thereafter, he united in love with his childhood sweetheart, Margaret, affectionately known as Peggy. Together, they embarked on a worldwide adventure of military life as Michael pursued flight school in Pensacola, earning his wings as a CH46 helicopter pilot. While he was in Pensacola, he and Peggy joyfully welcomed their first daughter, Kristin. Serving his country with honor, Michael completed his tour in Vietnam.   While stationed at USMC Air Station in Yuma, Arizona, they joyfully welcomed their second daughter, Hillary.

Throughout his 20-year military career, Michael served in various assignments abroad, until he returned to his beloved Virginia, a place he always called home.

After retiring from the Marine Corps, Michael embarked on a new chapter in his professional life, this time in the world of Finance. He dedicated several years of his life to NASDAQ. A passionate and avid learner, he earned a master's degree in international finance from George Washinton University and an MBA from Marymount University.  His quest for knowledge never ceased, with a particular passion for current events, JFK, and world affairs. This thirst for knowledge, coupled with his love of friendship, allowed Michael to form lasting connections with friends from across the globe that spanned decades.

For anyone who knew Michael, his joy could be found either in the cockpit of an airplane or at the helm of a sailboat. An accomplished pilot, he spent countless weekends soaring the skies with his friends. His love for sailing led to many summers spent exploring the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay on his beloved boat first with his daughters and then with his grandchildren. Beyond all his interests and hobbies, his true love and passion lay with his immediate and extended family.

Michael was a beaming and devoted father and grandfather, cherishing the lives of his children and grandchildren. His unwavering interest in their athletic, academic, and artistic pursuits was an unending source of inspiration for his loved ones. Watching them grow and forge their own unique paths brought him immense joy. Michael lived every moment of every day with purpose, making the most of every minute, regardless of his location or activity.

The legacy of John Michael Kelly will be forever treasured for the wisdom, warmth, and values he instilled in his family. He lived a life rich with meaning, and his impact, both in his professional and personal life, will be felt for generations to come.

John Michael Kelly is survived by his cherished wife of 57 years, Peggy; Kristin and Scott Bashore, Bill and Hillary Klein.  He is survived by grandchildren: Julia and Dean Hildner, Nolan and Aidan Bashore, and Abby and Mia Klein.
