John "Jack" Robert Wargo, of Leesburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 8, 2025, at the age of 85. John is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lorraine Wargo; his three children, Jacqueline Gerham (Scott), Jeffrey Wargo, and Janean Buchner; and his four cherished grandchildren, John Bradford "Brad" Buchner (Kelsey), Matthew Gerham, Christopher Gerham (Alexa), and Andrew Buchner. He was the oldest of four siblings: Harry Wargo (Suzi), Eugene Wargo (Sandy), and Mary Ann Hoag (Will). Jack was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews currently living in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Colorado.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, to Harry and Frances Wargo, who preceded him in death, John was a scholar and an athlete of Central Catholic High School, where he was later inducted into the Hall of Fame for his career achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Duquesne University and pursued graduate studies there. Additionally, he completed the Advanced Management Program at the University of Texas and participated in executive management programs at Harvard, Columbia, The Wharton School of Business, Duke, and Georgetown University.
After college, John proudly served in the United States Coast Guard before embarking on a distinguished career in 1971 with the United States Postal Service. He rose to the rank of senior executive, serving as Assistant Postmaster General and Senior Vice President of Strategic Marketing & Customer Relations. He was also Chairperson of the Mailers Technical Advisory Committee, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
John's dedication and leadership earned him numerous accolades, including the Key to the City of Pittsburgh and an official proclamation of "John Wargo Day" in his honor. The National Association of College & University Mail Services established a scholarship in his name, recognizing his contributions to the field of higher education. Additionally, he was honored by members of Congress, including Senator Orrin Hatch, with an American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol to thank him for his contributions that directly benefited their states. John's incredible work ethic and commitment to service resulted in countless other awards and recognition on a regular basis.
Despite his many professional achievements, John remained humble, taking the greatest pride in his family, especially his four grandsons. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a deep love for sports, enjoying basketball, tennis, and golf throughout his life. A dedicated youth sports coach and mentor, he influenced many both personally and professionally. John also cherished his time with friends, whether on the golf course, tennis court, or playing cards at Springfield Country Club and River Creek Club.
His legacy is one of leadership, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Mass to honor Jack's life will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church on February 22, 2025, at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Parkinson's Foundation at
