Obituary

John Andrew Turnicky, 79, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on September 30, 2026, in Leesburg, Virginia.

John was born to John Turnicky and Mary Turnicky on August 12, 1947, and grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Central Bucks West High School, he later graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

John lived a life defined by service, commitment, and an abiding love for the people around him. He met his wife, Yolanda, while serving in the United States Army, during his Defense Language Institute training at Fort Bliss Texas. They married shortly after John returned from his tour in Vietnam, beginning what would become nearly 60 years of marriage, partnership, and shared memories.

After his military service, John served for several years as a member of the Capitol Police, then the Department of State before beginning a dynamic career of more than thirty years with the Central Intelligence Agency. Whatever role he held, John approached it with the same qualities that defined him throughout his life: dedication, integrity, energy, and a genuine willingness to help others.

But for all that John accomplished in his professional life, his greatest source of pride and happiness was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome and cared for, and his bright smile and infectious energy could light up a room. Those who knew John will remember not only the things he accomplished, but the warmth, generosity, and enthusiasm with which he lived his life.

John enjoyed 1950s music, traveling, reading, puzzles, and, with particular enthusiasm, all things involving Philadelphia sports. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life and in sharing those pleasures with the people he loved. Above all else, John treasured his family, and the time spent together was what meant the most to him.

John is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Yolanda; his son, John D. Turnicky; his daughter in law; Ann Marie Turnicky; his granddaughter Bailey Turnicky; his sisters; Joan Cullen and Mimi Mensch; his brother, Ron Turnicky; and his niece Yvonnne Espinoza. He will be deeply missed by his family and by the many friends and colleagues whose lives he touched.

John leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a legacy of service and devotion, and most importantly, a family who loved him deeply and will carry his memory with them always.
