IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jon Richard
Moore
January 21, 1940 – May 13, 2025
Jon Richard Moore, age 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Heritage Hall in Leesburg, VA, surrounded by his two daughters and granddaughter. He was born on January 21, 1940, to the late Richard Harris and LaVerne Brown Moore.
Jon lived a typical, post-depression era childhood in a Excelsior Springs, MO. It was a life with no tv, cell phones, or Internet. He fished, hunted, biked, and became a Boy Scout in the local troop. He attended high school at Morgan Park Military Academy in Chicago, IL, to help get him "out of jeans and open his thinking to a broader spectrum" than he would find in his small rural town in the midwest. At MPMA, he participated in many clubs - Spanish, football, rifle club, photography, newspaper, bowling, and tennis. He was also 1 of only 4 members of the National Honor Society.
After graduating high school, he attended George Washing University in Washington, D.C., where he also participated in many clubs and was a member of the Honor Society. He was a distinguished member of Tau Kappa Epsilon, serving as President during his senior year. He also met his future wife of 51 years, Marjorie, while a junior.
After college, Jon was briefly employed by the Department of Labor and also served a short stint as a United States Capitol Police Officer before establishing himself as a civilian in the Navy Housing Department. He started as a trainee in the summer of 1966 and served nearly 40 years, earning regular promotions to retire as the Deputy Director of Housing.
Following his federal service, Jon served 19 years as the Executive Director of the Professional Housing Management Association, a non-profit organization working to improve military housing. He then served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Military Housing and Lodging Institute until 2013.
On January 3, 1964, he married his college sweetheart, Marjorie, and in less than five years, they had three children: Jon Michael, Mona Byrd, and Mary Anne. Although he traveled the world for his job, he remained a devoted father who especially enjoyed weekend time with his family on local trips to the zoo, biking along the C & O bike path in D.C., watching Sunday night tv shows, and swimming & bbq'ing during the summer months.
Jon was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Ellen Byrd Moore; his son, Jon Michael Moore; and his granddaughter, Hannah Byrd Moore Clarkson.
He is survived by his daughters, Mona Byrd Pearson and Mary Anne Clarkson (James S. Clarkson, III); and his granddaughter, Emma James Clarkson.
Jon will be laid to rest beside his son, wife, and granddaughter at a private graveside ceremony in Colonial Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, VA, on June 7, 2025. Friends are invited to his daughter's house in Arlington, VA, following the service, from 1:30-4:30 to celebrate his life, share memories, and mourn his passing.
Jon was an animal lover and always had dogs, cats, and birds as beloved pets. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jon's name can be sent to NEADS World Class Service Dog Team (neads.org).
