It is with profound sorrow mixed with a deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Joseph Samuel Buccolo on May 25, 2026. Known as Jay to his family and Joe to all others, Joe passed away at home surrounded by love and warmth.

Joe was born on August 3, 1955, in Utica, New York, to George and Jean Buccolo. He was predeceased by his father George, stepmother Theresa, sister Georgine, brother Georgie, grandparents Joe and Julia Buccolo, grandparents Sam and Edna Rockino, and his father-in-law Joe Lostracco.

A devoted family man, Joe is survived by his cherished wife of nearly 45 years, Debra, who stood by him with unwavering strength and love, and his mother Jean. Also mourning his loss are his twin sister Lynne and her husband Roy, nieces Stefanie and Goddaughter Julia, sister Kim and her husband Mark, nephew Samuel and Godson Elliot, his Godfather Uncle Dave, and many cousins. Deb’s family includes mother-in-law Betty, her many sisters, brothers-in-law, beloved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Deb's sister Carol and brother-in-law David, who were with him many times these past two years, held a special place in Joe's heart. As did Goddaughter Danielle and nephew Jack, who shared Joe's love for golf. Joe had the honor of officiating at Jack's wedding to Kristin in May 2021. He also leaves behind countless dear friends who were like family to him and who will always remember him for his kindness and genuine spirit.

Joe's educational journey took him from Notre Dame High School in Utica, NY, where he graduated in 1973, to the Catholic University of America, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. His career was marked by dedication and integrity, serving the Federal government for 35 years. Joe spent the majority of his career with the U.S. Navy and later contributed his expertise to the Federal Deposit Insurance Agency. Following the tragic events of September 11, Joe dedicated his efforts to the Department of Homeland Security, working with the U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service until his retirement in 2012.

Throughout his life, Joe was a passionate advocate for youth sports, coaching little league baseball and girls travel basketball. He believed wholeheartedly in the power of sports to shape young lives. An avid golfer and lover of long walks with Deb, Joe enjoyed staying active. His love of good food, fine wine and a good cigar is also noteworthy.

Joe was known for his kindness, genuineness, warmth, and generosity, and his sense of humor. His extraordinary spirit touched everyone he met, leaving an indelible mark on the world, and he was universally loved by all who knew him.

A Funeral Mass will be held to celebrate Joe's life on June 5, 2026, at 1:30 PM at St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, located at 101 Oakcrest Manor Drive, NE, Leesburg, VA 20176. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Joe's memory to the Glioblastoma Foundation at glioblastomafoundation.org an organization close to their hearts.

Debra extends her heartfelt gratitude to their family and many close friends who provided consistent love and support these past two years; both she and Joe felt it deeply. Special thanks are also extended to Joe's doctors and hospice team for their exceptional care and compassion.

Joe Buccolo's legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life dedicated to others. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
