Celebrating the Life of Joseph L. Lockett, Jr.

On November 13, 1960, Joseph L. Lockett, Jr. was born the middle child and only son of the union between Joseph L. Lockett, Sr. and Barbara N. Irvin-Lockett in Monticello, FL. Affectionately known as "Joe" or "Junior" by friends and family, his early childhood was spent in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. At the age of 16, Joe was baptized and accepted Christ alongside his younger sister. Junior completed Tennessee High School, Bristol, TN in 1978 and enlisted in the United States Army the same year. He served his country for seven years and his tour of duty included Louisiana and Germany.

He was married to Tonya Lockett for twenty-three years and settled in Bristol, VA. Through their union, they had three sons, Joseph Terrell Lockett of Cincinnati, OH; Jamal Rondel Laron Lockett and Desmond Jerome Lockett both of Bristol. VA. In 2002, he settled in the DC, MD, VA area where his youngest child and only daughter was born, Jocelyn Nichols Lockett of Sterling, VA.

Throughout his life, Joseph was devoted to his family and a faithful friend, co-worker and a deacon for three years at Kingdom Life Ministries Church, Bristol. He was known for his quiet spirit and faithful singing of "Lord Prepare Me to be a Sanctuary." He loved the outdoors where he often fished, hunted, and supported his children's sports activities. In his later years when his health was good, he attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Herndon, VA and loved to hear Pastor Graham preach. His favorite television show was Andy Griffin, and he was an avid Denver Broncos fan. Joseph worked at Strongwell Corporation for over fifteen years, where he quickly excelled as a facilitator travelling throughout the region training various departments on quality assurance. He also worked for The Hyatt Corporation, Giant Foods, Timsco, and The Home Depot.

Once you got past his stern look, his heart was soft and very loving. He was known for his unique, dry humor. When you met him, he would often say, "Don't you know who I am? I am "JT", Joe Terrific." He was determined to make you smile. Through his dry humor and big heart, he easily made friends wherever he went and was well respected for his work ethic. Joseph was soft-spoken and always ended his conversations with his family with three simple words; "I Love You."

Two years ago to the very day of his passing, he had a critical injury at work, which culminated with other health issues too much for him to bear. Early, February 11, 2015, he went to his final resting place. He leaves behind his mother, Barbara Lockett, Ashburn, VA, his sisters Loye "Vicki" Brown (Robert), Leesburg, VA, Daphne Rojas (Jose), Clinton, MD, Natasha Foster, Orlando, FL, Kelly Lockett, Tuskegee, AL; his children listed above; grandchildren Desmond Baker Lockett, Trey Donovan Lockett, Cameron Isaiah Scott Lockett, Jaxsyn Laron Lockett; nephews Jose Rojas III, Jason Rojas, John G. DuBose II, and nieces Brianna DuBose, and Londyn Lockett, a host of aunts, uncles, extended family and friends.

Joseph L. Lockett, Jr. truly loved God. This was expressed in the love he had for his family, his work ethic, and the many lives he touched along the way. Although we are sad in his passing, we remain steadfast and confident that he is somewhere in heaven quietly watching over his family, asking God to call him "JT", telling the same, ole dry jokes, watching the Andy Griffin Show, and cheering for his Denver Broncos. We thank God for the time He gave Junior to us. "Joe Terrific" will truly be missed by all who knew him.
