Obituary

Juanita Louise Standard , 101, of Lansdowne Woods, Lansdowne, VA, died on January 19, 2025.

Juanita was born February 4, 1923, in Louisville, Kentucky, the only child of J. Arthur and Mary Schehr Bartley. She graduated from Academy of Our Lady of Mercy in June, 1941, in Louisville and went on to attend business school. Juanita then began her 40-year career in the banking industry and met co-worker Mary Tompert, with whom she had a life-long friendship.

She grew up in Louisville, for many years not only the only child/grandchild, but also the only niece of eight sets of aunts and uncles. She loved being around her relatives, especially every Sunday when they would gather at her grandmother's farmhouse across the river in Indiana. As a teenager, she traveled out west with her mother, and Juanita loved to tell the story of when she rode a mule down the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon.

Juanita moved to Washington, DC in 1952, with her husband and the father of her two sons, William Dixon. She continued her career as a bank teller at the Metropolitan National Bank, American Security and Trust Co, and Columbia First Federal S&L, all within a block of the White House. She loved her customers and took great pride in her work. Even last week, she reminisced about driving through the snow to get to work on time.

In 1959, she married the love of her life – Max A. Standard. Together they would raise a family in Annandale. They enjoyed their friends in the Sertoma Club of Alexandria and they were always interested in the latest restaurant recommended in the Washington Post. Juanita and her mom played Bingo every Friday night at the Fairfax firehouse. Eventually Max and Juanita found a second home in Palm City, Florida. There, they enjoyed golf, beach walks, flea markets, and visits from family. In the winter, Juanita would often call her family up north to report the warm temperature where she was.

After retirement, she filled her time volunteering at St Ambrose Catholic Church in Annandale, cooking and shopping, and most importantly, perfecting her role as grandmother to Sarah, Michael, and Jeffrey. She loved taking them to the circus and the movies, back to school shopping, baking exotic birthday cakes, and playing Skip-Bo and Penny in the Pot. She was a wonderful grandmother.

After Max passed away, Juanita moved to Leisure World in 2003 with her mother and Bingo partner, Mary Bartley (Mary aged 99 at the time). Juanita enjoyed the company of her new friends at LW, and always looked forward to helping with Singles and delivering the newsletter. She took great pleasure in leaving notes and treats at the doors of her fellow residents.

Juanita is survived by her two sons, Thomas Dixon and James Dixon (Julie), and her three grandchildren, Sarah Wendell (Preston), Michael Dixon (Aimee), and Jeffrey Dixon (Robin). She is also survived by her eight greatgrandchildren, Taylor, Elliott, Dixon, James, George, Julianna, Claire, and Henry.

Juanita will join her husband, Max, at Arlington Cemetery, with services at a later date.
