Larry Mervyn Lane, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the Great Falls Assisted Living Facility for memory care in Reston, Virginia. He was surrounded by the love and the gratitude of his family.

Larry was born in Glendale, California to Ellen Elizabeth Lawson and Maxwell Everett Lane. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Russell, as well as a toddler grandson, Walker Thomas Lane. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife and best friend of 52 years, Judith Walker Lane of Ashburn, Virginia, their daughter Jennifer (Jason) of Ashburn, Virginia, their son Timothy (Angel) and his two grandsons, Braden and Jameson of Houston, Texas.

Larry devoted his life to his family and to public service. He enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War at the age of 21, receiving a purple heart for his service. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Larry accepted a civilian position with the Department of the Navy. He then finished his 30-year civil service career with the U.S. Department of the Interior serving in San Francisco, Denver, and Washington D.C., receiving the Meritorious Service Award from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Distinguished Service Award from the Office of the Secretary, Department of the Interior.

Upon retirement from the Department of the Interior, Larry finished his Ph.D. at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and taught at American University in Washington D.C. during the 1990s. After a move to Tennessee, he taught at the University of Tennessee as an adjunct professor in the early 2000s.

The burial and memorial service will take place at Arlington National Cemetery as space becomes available.
