Lawrence Paul Bartnick

Larry Bartnick passed away on January 18, 2012 at age 87 in Leesburg, VA. He is survived by Kathleen, his wife of 66 years, children: Robert Bartnick, Miami, FL, Kathleen Trost, Fairfax Station, VA, Lorrie Borisewich, Goshen, NY, and Thomas Bartnick, Potomac Falls, VA; grandchildren: Carrie Bertuccio, Ryan Trost, Adam Trost, Daniel Bartnick, Kevin Bartnick, Kyle Borisewich, and Kacie Borisewich; and great grandchildren: Luca Bertuccio, Matthew Bertuccio, Alexis Trost and Jillian Trost. Mr. Bartnick was born to Leontina (Lottie) Gorska (Austria/Poland) and Frank Adam Bartnick (Russia/Poland) of Wakefield, MA, where he was fifth of six children. At Wakefield High School, Mr. Bartnick was a gifted student, exceptional athlete, and president of his junior and senior classes. He received 12 varsity letters and was co-captain of the football and baseball teams and captain of the basketball team. He was an All Scholastic in football and baseball and was voted the number one scholastic athlete of 1941-42 by the Boston press. Mr. Bartnick was the first person inducted into the Wakefield Memorial High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. He graduated from Dartmouth College where he played both football and baseball. Following officer training at Notre Dame University, he received his Navy commission and served on the U.S.S. Laub during WWII.
Despite being recruited by the NFL Rams football team, Mr. Bartnick opted for a career in education accepting a teaching position in secondary math at West Point Preparatory, NY. He later moved to Wolfeboro, NH to teach mathemathics and coach football at Brewster Academy. In 1951, he accepted a position at Natick High School, MA in the mathematics department while also serving as a varsity football coach. While at Natick High, Mr. Bartnick was appointed vice principal, and during this time, he earned a M.Ed. from Boston Univeristy and authored an instructional book on mathemathics classroom design.
In 1962, he became principal of Goshen Central High School, Orange County, NY and in 1964, accepted the position of Goshen's chief school administrator. During his 17 years of service as superintendent, he managed completion and opening of the present intermediate school as well as overseeing the design, construction, and dedication of the present high school. Under his leadership, the annual school budget grew from a few hundred thousand dollars to almost eight million. In 1972, as a noted educator, Mr. Bartnick was elected President of the New York Council of School District Administrators which represented over 700 chief school administrators. He retired to Louisville, Kentucky and returned to his first love of teaching mathematics by joining the staff at St. Francis High School, while also serving as a financial consultant for Waddell & Reed. Upon his second retirement, he moved to Lake of the Woods, Fredericksburg, VA where he was an active tennis player and community member. Lawrence Bartnick's influence was felt by a multitude of individuals and groups throughout his lifetime as a student/athlete, Navy officer, teacher, coach, school administrator, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
