Obituary

Lawrence Douglas Day, age 75, of Ashburn, Virginia passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024, of metastatic melanoma with his loving family surrounding him.  He was compassionately cared for in his last days at Adler Hospice Center in Aldie, Virginia, for which we are eternally grateful.

Larry was born in Pueblo, Colorado in 1948 to Doug and Betty Jo Day, one of the most loving and caring couples. Larry and his younger brother Kenny enjoyed lots of outside time together when they moved to Colorado Springs when they were young.  Larry's father Doug had built their forever home on Templeton Gap with pride.  The family spent many happy day trips having breakfast among the aspens and exploring the beautiful bluffs of Colorado.

Larry excelled in grade and high school in Colorado Springs before attending the University of Colorado at Boulder.  He planned to be a math teacher and started that study path but switched to the Engineering School at CU to pursue computer systems engineering.  He ended up with 2 Bachelor of Science degrees as a result – proudly always the high achiever.  Upon graduation he worked for Colorado Interstate Gas, but was lured to work for a startup company, Northwest Pipeline Corporation in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a computer systems analyst.  He met his wife JoAnne there in 1979, who worked in the Contracts Department.  They were married in Utah in 1981.  They enjoyed skiing, hiking and exploring beautiful Utah together.

Larry was pursued often by headhunters for companies wanting his vast expertise, and as a result he and JoAnne moved to San Jose, California where Larry worked for Apple, Intel, and finally Lockheed Martin Corporation.  He helped raise two wonderful daughters, Brielle and Kelsea, who were born in California in 1986 and 1989.  They have always meant the world to him and JoAnne.

Lockheed moved the family in 1996 to headquarters in Maryland for more career opportunities for Larry there.  They settled in North Potomac where they met many close forever friends to travel with and enjoy family time together.

Larry retired from Lockheed in 2010.  He and JoAnne continued to travel the world with good friends and family, making lasting memories.

Brielle and her husband Mike, and Kelsea and her husband Tommy, eventually moved to Leesburg, Virginia and welcomed cherished grandchildren Frankie, Cal, Diana and James.   Larry and JoAnne felt their world brightened tenfold with their births.  Loving memories were made often with casual family gatherings and trips.

After a few years of retirement, Larry and JoAnne moved to Birchwood at Brambleton, a beautiful new community in Ashburn, close to their children and grandchildren.  Larry and JoAnne enjoyed many games of Pickleball, neighborhood gatherings, parties and card games with wonderful new friends they are so blessed to know.  They also continued travels and get togethers with great friends from their special Maryland dining group.

Larry has left a strong loving legacy for his family, and he will be missed very much.
