Marshall Leston "Tom" Carlson

April 21, 1931 – November 4, 2021

Tom Carlson (age 90), recently of Martinsburg, WV, and formerly of Hillsboro, VA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 4, 2021, with his devoted and loving family by his side.

In Chicago, IL, Tom was born to Grover and Adelaide Carlson and was the youngest of four brothers. His family moved to New Buffalo, MI, where he grew up from the age of five. His love for New Buffalo and Lake Michigan was constant and never waned throughout his life.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Helen F. Carlson, loving and devoted children Cindy Atkins (Jim), Leisa Priddy, Les Carlson (Su), Tracy MacDonald (Brian), Ron Moore (Pia), Kim Kavanagh, and Meredith Shonkwiler (Kevin); his grandchildren who loved and adored their "Bumby," Matt Priddy (Melanie), Lindsey Bordovsky, Anna MacDonald, Michelle Sclater (Dustin), Danny and Katherine McKim, Shannon Jones (Danny), Zach and Blair Carlson, Ethan and Blake Moore, Molly, Sarah, and John Kavanagh, Brad, Chris, and Nicky Shonkwiler; and his great-grandchildren Tyler and Olivia Priddy, Jake and Bailey Sclater, Kane and Kellen Jones, and Carson and Mason Shonkwiler. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who, along with everyone who knew Tom, adored their "Uncle Tom."

Everyone who knew Tom, loved Tom. Our hearts are broken, and we will all miss him terribly, but we know he is probably in a deep conversation right now with one of his favorite writers, Mark Twain.

Tom's family welcomes you to celebrate his life with us on Monday, November 15, 2021, at Cornerstone Chapel, 650 Battlefield Parkway, SE, Leesburg, VA. A Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 am followed by a Memorial Service from 11:00 – 12:00 pm. Following the Memorial Service will be a reception with refreshments and appetizers that we invite you all to attend.

Memorial contributions may be made in Tom's name to Cornerstone Chapel in lieu of flowers.
