Luz Elena Meloy passed away at her home in Ashburn, VA on January 12 th , 2020, as a result of natural causes. She was a seven year resident of Ashburn, preceded by 36 years in Vienna, VA.
Born May 7, 1932, in Douglas, AZ, she attended Arizona State University, Tempe, for one year before moving to San Diego to complete her RN education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, followed by studies at the University of San Diego to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. While working at hospitals in San Diego, she met her future husband, Todd Meloy, a naval officer assigned to a San Diego submarine. They were married on February 7, 1959, to begin an enduring journey of over 59 years. As a Navy wife, Luz experienced the tribulations and joys of frequent moves, travel, raising 3 children (often as a single mother while her husband was at sea), and "mothering" 4 Exchange Students. She was an active participant in Navy family activities, including volunteer work with the Navy Relief Society, various positions with the Girl Scouts, and as a Red Cross Volunteer. She earned a Graduate Diploma Fifth Year Certificate in education from the University of Hawaii in 1968, was a Life Member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), an active participant in the diplomat THIS group of the greater Washington area, and a major contributor to the Beyster Institute for Nursing Research at the University of San Diego.
Upon her husband's retirement from the Navy in 1975, she and her husband formed "Crystalake Engravers," an Awards and Recognition company headquartered in Vienna, VA. She served as the Corporate Secretary, Human Resources Manager, and engraver for the next 35 years, during which time their company became a nationally recognized vendor of recognition awards for numerous government agencies and local organizations. She was a member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Vienna and the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) for 35 years.
After selling the business in 2012 and moving to the Ashby Ponds Retirement Community in Ashburn, Va, she participated in out-reach support to the local rehabilitation and nursing care facility, Maple Grove, as well as enjoying extensive travel with her husband.
She is predeceased by her husband, and survived by sons Wil and Ted Meloy, and daughter Elizabeth Nestor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Ashby Ponds Farmwell Hall on the 7 th of February at 1300 (1 pm). Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Lupus Foundation of America.
