Madeline Ellen Potter
October 4, 1940 – February 20, 2026
Madeline Ellen Potter (née Kefford), age 85, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia. Madeline led a life characterized by remarkable strength, resilience, and a vibrant artistic spirit, touching the lives of many through her contributions to education, music, and sports.
Born in England on October 4, 1940, to Arthur and Annie Kefford, Madeline married Michael Moore in 1964. Following Michael's completion of his PhD at Imperial College London, the family relocated to the Pittsburgh area in 1966. Madeline embraced the challenges of an international life with grace as she moved between Monroeville, PA, and Newcastle, England, before establishing her long-term home in Murrysville, PA, in 1975.
A dedicated educator, Madeline returned to school later in life to obtain her teaching credentials. She spent many fulfilling years inspiring students at Gateway High School and Springdale High School, retiring in 2002. Madeline proudly became a United States citizen in 1982.
Throughout her life, Madeline was active and adventurous. She was known for her competitive spirit at the Racquet Club in Monroeville, where she played tennis for many years. In later years, she took up skiing, golf, and running, frequently participating in The Great Race in Pittsburgh.
Music and performance were her true passions; her home was filled with classical music, and she avidly supported the symphony. A lifelong singer, Madeline was a dedicated member of several church choirs and enjoyed performing in Gilbert and Sullivan musicals. She also cherished connections with international social clubs celebrating her British heritage.
In 1985, Madeline married Allen Potter, and they made their home in the Franklin Towne community of Murrysville for over three decades before moving to Ashburn, Virginia, in 2014. They also enjoyed many winters in Anna Maria Island, Florida.
Madeline is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Valerie Ann Kane, her former husband Michael Moore, and her former husband Allen Potter. She is survived by her son Simon Moore and his wife Ingrid; her daughter Catherine Mitchell and her husband Lance; her grandchildren Derrick, Michael, and Emma; her brother Michael Kefford; her nieces Sarah, Melissa, and Sharon; her nephew Sean, and their families; as well as countless friends who will miss her sharp wit and love of song.
