Obituary

Margaret Petney, 86 of Ashburn, VA passed away Tuesday 5/19/15 at Heritage Hall Rehab Center, Leesburg, VA. Born 4/7/29 in Portage, PA, daughter of the 1st generation immigration parents- late John and Anna (Kushner) Petney. Preceded in death by brothers John, Joseph, Michael, and Andrew and sister Mary. She is survived by brother George of Portage, PA and 20 nieces and nephews. She graduated from Portage Township H.S. in 1947 and entered the Women's Army Corps in 1951, completed basic training at Fort Lee, VA, achieved the rank of Sergeant and served in Europe, Heidelberg, Germany, Camp Darby, Livorno, Italy, Governors Island, NY. Also served in Army Reserve and as WAC recruiter from 1956-1962, earned Good Conduct, Bronze Star, and National Defense service medals and was proud to serve. She was keenly interested in the Women's and World War II Memorials/history and remembering all veterans, also preserving family/hometown history, championing elder rights. Margaret went on to work for the federal government for over 35 years including the CIA, Pentagon, and lastly as personnel clearance specialist for the Department of Energy, Washington, DC retiring in 1997. In 1984 she proudly received a bachelors degree in sociology/behavioral sciences from George Mason University, Fairfax, VA after many years of taking courses. She was happy and energetic- loved her cats Cleo and Gin Gin, collected beanie babies, blue and green colored glass, birds, roosters, monkeys. She liked going to Wegman's and the Russian Markets, watching birds, art/painting, and studying Carpatho Russian history/ language/faith. Margaret took much pride in her beautiful home, flower garden and neighborhood. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Margaret will be honored on May 28th, 2015 with graveside services scheduled at 1:00 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, VA. Arrangements are by Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, VA.

In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions be made to Loudoun Cat Center, 2 Cardinal Park Dr., Unit 102-C Leesburg, VA 20175.
