Obituary

Margaret "Margie" J. Spath, beloved wife, Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma "GGma," passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016, in hospice care at the home of her daughter, Katherine (KC). Family was with her when she passed.  Born on September 20, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, she was one of 10 children of David and Cecelia Coleman (both deceased).

A strong, spirited, kind and funny woman, she met her husband, Bill, (William C. Spath) at the USO in Chicago, Illinois, on July 4, 1957. It was love at first sight and they were married about one year later on July 12, 1958. A Navy wife, she and Bill had five children, William A. Spath (deceased) (Debbie), Paula M. Larkin, Katherine C. LeBlanc (Robert, deceased), Martha A. Spath, and Joseph D. Spath (deceased).   She was a proud Navy wife and she, Bill and their children traveled across the U.S. while he served, living in Illinois, Washington, California, Virginia, Connecticut, South Carolina and Hawaii, before Bill retired in 1977.  She also volunteered her time, helping out at church or her children's schools, as well as volunteering time at the military hospital or dispensary depending on where they were stationed.

They moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1977 where she worked at the U.S. Navy office as a civil servant, serving many roles before retiring as librarian in the early 90's.  Her co-workers enjoyed her sense of humor and the many cakes and cookies she would bake and bring into the office.

She said she loved her children but her greatest role in life was as a Grandma.  Wanting to be closer to family, Bill and Margie moved to Loudoun County, Virginia in 1996. She has seven grandchildren, Erin Burns (Robert), Kaitlyn Ahalt (Nick), Evan Spath, Brian Spath, Emily LeBlanc, Rachel LeBlanc, and Maggie Larkin; and five great grandchildren, Kylie, Ava and Kingston Ahalt, and Bobby and Andrew Burns.

In recent years, she volunteered at or donated to Mobile Hope in Leesburg, a charitable organization where her daughter KC works, that serves the needs of homeless and precariously housed children and young adults.

Family and friends loved her generous heart, sarcasm and humor.  She was the light of her family's life and will be greatly missed. She was truly one-of-a-kind and touched so many people in her life.

Margie is survived by her husband, Bill, her three daughters, her daughter-in-law, Debbie, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a brother, Edward Coleman, and sister, Patricia Toomey, both of Alsip, Illinois.

A wake will be held on Friday, November 25, from 6-8 pm.  A funeral service will take place beginning at 11 am on Saturday, November 26, followed by burial at Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mobile Hope in her memory. You may visit the Mobile Hope website at mobilehopeloudoun.org.
