Margaret L. Sterrett passed away on November 15, 2009. She was 79 years old.
She grew up in Texas and attended school at West Texas State College as an art student. She held a variety of jobs during and after college. She spent several years working as a bookkeeper for First National Bank and as a secretary for the Tulia Herald newspaper. In 1952, she joined the US Navy. She attained the rank of Yeoman, first class and spent two of her five years of service stationed in Japan. She was honorably discharged 1957 and entitled to wear the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. She returned to Washington, DC and worked as a TWA airline reservations representative.
She married her beloved husband, K. F. Sterrett, in 1960. They enjoyed 47 years together raising four children: David, Emily, Keith, and Rebecca. Margaret enjoyed a wide array of hobbies throughout her life. She was a skilled photographer, an accomplished seamstress, a gourmet cook, a successful gardener, a self-taught auto-body repair woman, a certified swim official, and a home knitting machine entrepreneur. She enjoyed hunting while advocating passionately for the protection of Loudoun's natural resources. She conducted her life according to the ethos that "one person can make a difference". Her commitment to community involvement and activism lives on through her close friends and children.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 19th at the Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, VA. Visiting hours begin at noon, the service at 1:00 pm.
