Marie Anne Smith
Commander, USN, Nurse Corp. (Retired)
Marie Anne Smith, 92 years old of Ashburn, VA., passed away on September 26 peacefully at
home after a short illness. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA., to the late Catherine Lynch, nee
Maloney and John Lynch.
She was a graduate of Saint Mary's High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in
Wilkes-Barre. In later years she completed her baccalaureate degree at Saint Louise University
and master's degree in Nursing Administration at Iowa University. She practiced nursing at
Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, NY., and was an instructor at the Misericordia
Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA., before joining the Navy Nurse Corp. During her
time in the Navy she was at Naval Hospitals at Great Lakes Ill., Kodiak, Alaska and
Philadelphia, PA. She was also an instructor at Hospital Corps School, in San Diego, CA.
During the period 1969-1971 she successively completed a tour of Recruiting Nurses for the
Navy in the mis-eastern section of the country. Her final duty station was the National Naval
Medical Center at Bethesda, MD. She retired from there in 1982 with the rank of Commander.
She is survived by her husband Thomas, of 44 years; step-children Thomas, Jr. of Charles
Town WV., Richard (Sherry) of Leesburg, VA., Lynda (Richard) of Sterling, VA., David (Jeri) of
Purcellville, VA., Dianna (James) of Purcellville, VA.; sister Catherine (Bernard) of Durham, NC.;
eighteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and numerous precious nieces and
nephews. She was Proceeded in death by her brother John of Cheektowaga, NY.
She loved to travel with her husband and visited numerous countries and points of interest over
the years. She was a devoted and loving mother and grand mother; her greatest love was her
family. She was at her happiest when surrounded by family on special holidays or events. Her
kind and gentle manner and a willingness to listen or lend a helping hand endeared her to both
family and many friends.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd., NE, Leesburg, VA  20176.  A Mass will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Theresa, Ashburn, VA.  Interment with Military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
