Mary Carnes, 98, of Round Hill, Virginia passed away on January 19, 2011 with family by her side. She was born September 27, 1912 in Hardwick, Georgia to Clarence W. and Mary Beulah (Paschal) Spivey. She had four brothers and three sisters. She attended Emory University and had a long career in education, teaching all grades including soldiers stationed in Germany. She was also a principal of an elementary school for a few years. Her love was travel. She enjoyed telling about seeing the Swiss Alps, Bavaria, Italy, Belgium and Germany. She resided in Germany for two years while her husband served in the Army. Her faith in God helped her through the difficult times of her life. She was proud to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses and would talk to everyone about her faith.
Mary is survived by her sons, Ross H. Carnes, Jr., and Johnny W. Carnes, daughters Mary E. Wilson and L. Kay Denman. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 brothers Webster and Bernard Spivey, with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents, her daughter, Barbara Butler, grandchildren Theresa Franklin, Abigail Carnes and Wesley Carnes. She also lost her sisters Edna Holsey, Ola Mae Curl, Myra Elliot and brothers Julian and Woodrow Spivey.
Mary touched many lives throughout the years with her teaching qualities. She will be remembered for her humor and the ability to speak her mind. She will be missed.
