IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary "Cathy"
Crosen Kennan
September 21, 1962 – January 30, 2025
On January 30, 2025, God called His loving and devoted daughter, Mary (Cathy) Crosen Kennan, to come home. She passed peacefully in her sleep and is now in the warm, embracing presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, her parents, Jimmy and Shirley Crosen, and all the loved ones who have passed before her.
Cathy was born and raised in Hamilton, Virginia, on September 21, 1962, to James Alvin Crosen and Shirley Ruth Fishback Crosen. She was one of four daughters and loved spending time with her family on old 704 while it was still farmland. She loved her home in Hamilton—everything from the smell of her mom canning tomatoes in the summer, to her daddy whistling endless tunes throughout the hallways, to the way she would rush out to the front porch to watch the storm roll in over the mountain and listen to the wind flow through the wind chimes, to her and her sisters, being goofy and mischievous, laughing, crying, and living—they loved their family and they loved their home.
Cathy graduated from Loudoun Valley High School in 1980 and went on to Ferrum College to pursue her love of music. She was the starter for The New Ferrum Singers. She had perfect pitch and could hear any note and match it. She also played the trumpet and the piano. College was also the time when she met her husband, Timothy William Kennan. They met while he was up on a ladder painting the neighbor's house, and they later married in 1984. Cathy and Tim loved to go fishing at White's Ferry and drive the old back roads; they loved the simple life that never changed. They had their daughter, Amie, in 1988 and their son, Seth, in 1992. She enjoyed vacationing with her family at Ocean Isle Beach, a tradition that started early in her life.
Cathy's career was with Middleburg Bank for many years, and her memories there were always happy. She loved the Middleburg Bank family, especially the parties - both business and personal. After her banking career, Cathy, along with her sister, took care of their parents. That career change wasn't expected, but it was a blessing.
In her free time, Cathy enjoyed cooking, canning, taking photos, writing, shopping on Amazon, gardening, or anything creative. She also loved politics and religion. She enjoyed listening to Pastor Gary of Cornerstone Chapel and Chris Plante of WMAL. When her son joined the Marine Corps, she quickly and wholeheartedly became a Marine Mom and was very proud of it. Cathy loved her animals; her most unexpected love was a huge bloodhound named Ralph. His slobber never bothered her, but we think she was alone in that. Ralph was definitely her favorite, but she loved all the others just the same—Rex, Tyler, Maxine, Stella, Luna, and all the cats. Another great pastime was going to concerts (Foreigner and the Eagles were her favorites) and attending the Patsy Cline events with her good friend Tracie. She disliked shopping; but she did love Safeway. I bet you've seen her there a time or two.
Cathy loved her husband, her children, and most recently, her granddaughter Jordyn. She was also very excited for her soon-to-be-born second granddaughter. Her love was abundant and pure, and she always had a solution to anything that was ever asked. She loved being needed. Cathy was a one-of-a-kind mother whom her kids loved with their whole being. She was also a daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and a great friend to many. Her presence always lit up a room, and she will be truly missed.
Cathy is predeceased by her parents, James Alvin Crosen and Shirley Ruth Fishback Crosen, her sister, Carolyn Crosen Quesenberry (Kevin) and brother-in-law, Douglas K. Burgess (Marie). She is survived by her husband, Timothy William Kennan; daughter, Amie Renee Kennan; son, Timothy Seth Kennan (Annie); and granddaughter, Jordyn Layne Kennan. She is also survived by her siblings: Susan Crosen Reimann (Rick) and Sarah Crosen Wiley (Mike).
