Mary Ellen Elmore, 88, passed away peacefully on January 20th, 2026. She was born on June 26th, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland, where she cherished many memories of her childhood, particularly helping at the family restaurant, Benkert’s Park, renowned for its exceptional crabcakes.
After high school, Mary Ellen ventured to Texas for work alongside three of her lifelong friends. She later returned east, living in Maryland and London before ultimately settling in Virginia, where she dedicated over 30 years to Northrop Grumman. Her strong Catholic faith guided her through life, and she was beloved for her kindness, generosity, and remarkable sense of humor. Her passions for swimming, the beach, reading, movies, and playing games were shared with her daughters and granddaughters.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, George J. Benkert Jr. and Margaret C. Benkert, and her brother, George Benkert. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Anderson (Dave) and Erin Elmore; her three granddaughters, Kerry, Rachel, and Lauren; her brother, Michael Benkert (Patti); sister-in-law, Georgette Benkert; nephews; cousins; ex-husband, Thomas Elmore; and many cherished friends, both old and new.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date to honor her life.
