Obituary

It is with deep sadness the family of Matthew James Menton announces his passing on February 13, 2019 at the age of 42, after courageously battling brain cancer. Matt, a much-loved husband, father, son and brother, was born on July 5th, 1976 in Peoria, Illinois and resided in Loudoun County for the past sixteen years. He graduated from Culpeper High School in 1994, received a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business, majoring in Accounting, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, Pamplin College of Business in 1998 and was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity. Matt had a successful career in accounting, spending over 10 years at Sallie Mae. He served as their Vice President of Accounting Operations, Policy, and Financial Reporting, where he formed strong friendships with his staff and other executives.

Matt, known as "Flounder" to his fraternity brothers, loved Virginia Tech football and making annual trips to various away games to loyally cheer on the Hokies. In his spare time, he enjoyed coaching his sons in soccer and flag football and acting as an official during their golf tournaments. One of his favorite activities was playing 18 holes at Belmont Country Club, frequently taking his sons along. Matt also loved traveling regularly with his wife and kids, with Aruba as a family favorite destination. They spent most of their summers with Matt's family at Lake Anna, boating, wake surfing and jet skiing, and took annual winter trips to Massanutten making lasting memories skiing and spending time together.

Matt will be forever remembered by those who knew him, especially his best friend and wife of 17 years Lauren, and their precious children, James (12) and Gavin (10), by his parents Mike and Martha Menton, his brother, Mark Menton and his wife, Susan, his sister Mary Ellen Akins and her husband, Chris, his sisters-in-law, Kristen Kruger and Alicia Dacey and her husband, TJ, and his parents-in-law, Mike and Nancy Kruger.  Matt will also be lovingly remembered by his nephews, Michael and Alexander, and his nieces, Lillian and Amelia, and extended family and dear friends, whose love has been expressed in the following statement, "Matt was one of the kindest people you could ever meet, friend to all, with a great sense of humor, and delight to be around. He was impossible not to love and will be sorely missed."

Friends and family are invited to share their memories of Matt during a Memorial Service which will be on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road NE, Leesburg VA 20176.
