Obituary
Michael James Long, 81, of Ashburn; our beloved husband, father and grandfather; died on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the INOVA Loudoun Hospital Center in Leesburg, Virginia surrounded by his family.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Helen; children Maura and Greg Wells, Kathleen Long and Michael and Molly Long, Jr, grandchildren Colby Caldwell, Lauren Long and Anja Long, sister Mary Eileen Gaffney and brother Reverend Joseph J. Long; and deceased brother Francis Long.
He grew up in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Kings College in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania he went on to serve in the U.S. Navy, where he was commissioned to the U.S.S. Sigourney. After serving in the Korean War, he left active duty to be with his growing family. After settling in upstate New York, he later embarked on a career in the insurance business as an adjuster with Nationwide Insurance. He spent the rest of his working career in upstate New York with Nationwide. After retiring in 1990, he and Helen moved to Northern Virginia in 1991 to be closer to their children.
He enjoyed his retirement years in Virginia by spending time with his beloved family and pursuing his passion for woodworking. His creative gift and ingenious know-how enabled him to create dozens upon dozens of treasured heirlooms that will allow his family to have a constant reminder of his love.
Those who knew him will remember him as a quiet, gentle man who was incredibly dedicated to the family. He was an inspiration to us all.
The family will be receiving friends and family at the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, Virginia 20176 on June 4, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A mass celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Theresa Catholic Church, 21370 St. Theresa Lane, Ashburn, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the INOVA Loudoun Hospital at Loudoun Healthcare Foundation, 44035 Riverside Parkway, Suite 420, Leesburg, Virginia 20176. Please state the name Michael Long in the memo of your check.
