Michael Joseph Marlow, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday May 28, 2016 in Ashburn, Virginia. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Jean (Clark) Marlow; his daughter Jamie (Marlow) Semler and her husband Doug Semler, his two grandchildren and his golden retriever, Lolly.
Mike Marlow was born on April 21, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was one of two boys born to Michael Marlow Sr and Ruth Horvath Marlow.
Mike's true passion with radio and television began as a sportscaster at age 14 in Ohio with WHK-WCLE in Cleveland and WMRA in Canton. From there he moved to Pittsburgh and then to Washington, DC and New York. Michael graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 1950 and later attended Georgetown Law School. He married Jean Ellen Clark in 1959. Michael was an avid reader, photographer and adorer of music and drama.
Mike Marlow was a radio and TV announcer and producer; an Executive producer of Face the Nation for CBS; held many positions in Public Relations and Affairs with the Agency for International Development at the U.S. State Department and was a Spokesman for the Secretary General and Deputy Director at the United Nations. He also was a Media Specialist and Freelance Writer.
He created, produced and directed many radio and television programs: Overseas Mission, White House Chronicle, The United Nations' World Chronicle, Europe Today, News Wheel, Letter from London, America's World Forum, and Radio Australia. In addition to Face the Nation, he produced the following programs for CBS News: CBS Television Morning Show, Washington Conversation, Capitol Cloakroom, At the Source, Congressional Close-Up, Capitol Hill to California and Will Rogers Morning Program. He also worked with Voice of America, Norwood Television and as Media Manager for the Gemini-Titan manned space program with Martin Marietta.
Mike Marlow was Corporal of United States Army and later First Lieutenant of the United States Air Force. While in the armed services, he wrote, produced and directed various media programs including Time for Defense, The Armed Forces Review and Pentagon-Washington.
Professional Associations include: National Press Club (Golden Owl) since 1954; Sigma Delta Chi Professional Journalism Society since 1959; Washington Press Club, Overseas Press Club, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences; Phi Delta Phi; Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Francis Episcopal Church 10033 River Road in Potomac, Maryland. A light luncheon will follow the service in the adjoining St. Francis Hall. Please scroll down to view a glimpse into his amazing life.
