Muriel "Jonni" Christophersen, 69
A long-time Virginia resident, Muriel B. Christophersen (69) passed away August 20, 2012 due to cancer at her daughter's home in Leesburg, VA.
Mrs. Christophersen, known as "Jonni" by her many friends, was born November 17, 1942 in Niagara Falls, NY as the only child to the late Howard M. and Esther A. (Goss) Bratt. She moved to Lancaster, CA as a child and later met and married her former husband, Peter Christophersen. In the late 1960's, she moved to the east coast and took residency in the cities of Williamsburg, Yorktown, Hampton, Alexandria and Lansdowne.
Jonni fought cancer for a quarter of a century. She survived more than 20 surgeries and hundreds of chemo treatments since the bladder cancer had been first diagnosed in 1988; and in 2004, half of her left lung was removed to fight lung cancer. Her courage throughout the battles was admiring, her spirit uplifting, and her sense of humor always quick-witted.
Jonni retired from 30-year's civil service to the U.S. Department of the Army as a GS-13 in 1997. She spent much of her time traveling as a computer specialist installing IT infrastructures to many army bases in the U.S. and abroad. Some of her favorite places to visit included: Alaska, Hawaii, California and Germany. She was also a recovering alcoholic about to achieve her 31st year of successful recovery and sobriety.
She is survived by her son Philip Christophersen (daughter-in-law Wanda) and daughter Cheri Shields (son-in-law Raymond); grandchildren Sarah Christophersen, Steven Pender, Christina "Nina" Pender, and Kyle Shields; and great grandchildren Isabella, Annaleigh and soon to be born Christopher. She also had many adopted family members who she loved deeply, including Michael Scott who was extremely helpful in her final weeks of need.
At her request the family will be receiving friends at 1640 Chickasaw Place NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 on Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm for a formal remembrance immediately followed by a social gathering to celebrate the memories of her life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to "Treasurer" at The Serenity Club located at 8121-B Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 20165. It is this Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Chapter where she found unity, service and recovery.
