Nathan Shreve Spitler
On February 2, 2020, Dr. Nathan Shreve Spitler, 88, of Ashburn, Virginia, passed away. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jean; children: Mary (Jack); Michael (Faith), Mark; Karen, Hal (Nubia), Sabrina; grandchildren: Sean (Erin), Thomas, Colleen, Erika, Monika, Jacob, Sterling, Gregory (Katie), Elizabeth (DJ), Emma, Westin, Harlan, Marina; and great-grandchildren: Claire, Brigid, Elly, and Christopher. Shreve is predeceased by his brother, Robert, and his son, David. Shreve grew up in Luray, Virginia, with his parents, younger brother Robert, and many Spitler relatives. After the passing of his father, the family moved to Arlington, Virginia. Shreve attended St. James Elementary School in Falls Church, Gonzaga High School in DC, Georgetown University for pre-dental, and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in Richmond.
He served as a US Army dentist for 2 years before opening his own practice in McLean, Virginia. He served as an outstanding family dentist from 1958 until retirement in 2014. His passion for dentistry never waned. He took many dental courses, always wanting to stay current in his field,
and was the first dentist in Virginia to perform implants. He had an exemplary career and his legacy lives on. Besides dentistry, Shreve's other great passion was playing his fiddle. He started as a fiddler with The Rhythm Rangers band during college, playing for square dances and on radio station WARL. He continued playing the fiddle for the rest of his life, entering many fiddle contests, and playing for family and fun. He enjoyed skiing and was a lifelong member of the Optimist Club. Shreve also loved learning about nutrition and was a honey beekeeper for a season.
Visitation on Friday, February 7, from 6:00-8:00 at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, VA. Funeral Mass at noon on Saturday, February 8, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, VA. Followed by burial at St. John the Apostle Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to Gonzaga High School or the Boy Scouts of America.
The family wishes to give a special note of thanks to Tribute at One Loudoun, in Ashburn, VA, for providing much loving care to their Father during the last few years of his life.
