A lovely woman who made the world a beautiful place. Nettie Alberta Wilklow passed away on July 11, 2010 at the age of 90 years old. She made her home in Paeonian Springs, Virginia.
Born in Hagerstown, Maryland on December 20, 1919, Nettie Alberta Richardson was the daughter of proud parents Edward and Hazel (Smith) Richardson. She later married George Henry Wilklow, Sr. and together they raised four children on a farm in Loudoun County, Virginia. Nettie was a loving wife and mother. She put much effort into making her family happy. Her children remember the fun times when she would fry chicken and make potato salad for an outing to the Hagerstown Park in Hagerstown, Maryland. A hard worker, she always had beautiful gardens which produced much food for her family. Any extra food her family could not use she canned, looking ahead to the winter months. Nettie and her husband were very self sufficient people. They had very little they needed to purchase. Nettie was known to all for her green thumb, having the loveliest of flower beds. She made sure her family was warm by crocheting blankets, slippers, scarves, hats and anything else that they might be in need of. Nettie was an excellent cook. Everyone looked forward to Sunday dinners. Some say they could smell the aroma of her cooking from the main highway. She never used recipes when she cooked; using her own skills in adding a pinch of this and a dash of that. While each had their favorites of blackberry cobblers or chocolate pies, all will agree....you only have to close your eyes and you can still smell her famous hot rolls. When grandchildren and great grandchildren came along, they were enveloped in Granny's loving arms.
After moving to Paeonian Springs, Virginia, Nettie continued to form close ties. Her neighbors were instantly drawn to her. Although she continued to be independent, her neighbors insisted on providing help through offering rides, yard work, anything that needed to be done. When employees from local businesses were called in to do repairs they immediately came to love "Granny".
Those left behind to cherish and share her memories are her sister; Margaret Rhodes, children; Janet Wilklow Kirkpatrick, Joan Wilklow Daugherty and Richard E. Wilklow and his wife Ruth, grandchildren; James D. Kirkpatrick, Jr., Jane Ann Underwood, Julie Lynn Burr and husband Mike, David Daugherty and wife Sue, John Daugherty, Karen Evans, Laura Hill and husand Jim, Robert Wilklow; and great grandchildren; Nichole Underwood, Joey, Daniel, Conner and Taylor Burr; Travis, Sara and R.J. Evans, Peyton and Cain Hill, Kiana Daugherty and Michael Daugherty. She was predeceased by her husband George Henry Wilklow, Sr. and son George H. Wilklow, Jr. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd, NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 on July 14, 2010 between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. A service will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, July 15, 2010 starting at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Stuart James officiating.
