Nicholas Theodore Nylec (Nick) passed away peacefully at Inova Loudoun Hospital in Lansdowne, VA on November 24, 2014, after a long battle with the progression of Alzheimer's disease and diabetes.
Nick was born to the late Margaret (Billie) and Ted Nylec on October 2, 1939 in Gary, Indiana. He is a Purdue University graduate with a degree in Political Science. He proudly served his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy until 1968. He was serving aboard the USS Calvert, APA-32 when they transported the first Marines to Vietnam in 1965.
Nick met and married his wife, Del, in San Diego, CA in 1964. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary this year on August 22. While he was stationed in London for three years, they were blessed with two sons, Nicholas and Mark. They lived 37 years in Potomac, Maryland before moving to Leisure World of Virginia.
Nick's civilian career included jobs with various companies, most notably IBM, General Electric, and Lockheed Martin. After retirement he worked as a defense contractor consultant, before becoming a "guest teacher" in Montgomery County Public Schools. He insisted on being known as a guest teacher, rather than a substitute teacher, charming the students into treating him like a guest. He was loved by the students and teachers, at Robert Frost and Cabin John Middle Schools.
Nick was the source of so much fun and love to his family, especially his grandchildren, Tommy and Becca. They have many fond and treasured memories of "Papa Nick" entertaining them with jokes and laughter.
He is survived by his wife, Dellys, two sons, Nicholas (Sharon) and Mark (Deborah) and two grandchildren, Thomas and Rebecca; Two nephews, David and Darren Nylec of McKinney, Texas; His Austrian daughter, Dr. Gitta Domik, AFS Exchange Student, and Austrian Godson, Jakob Domik Kienegger.
