Obituary

Patricia Wagner Stallsmith Carlson, 83, died on Sun., Oct. 7, 2012, surrounded by family at her home in Leesburg, Va. She was born in New York City and grew up in Garden City, N.Y., graduating from Garden City High School. After attending the University of Colorado, she transferred to The George Washington University, earning a degree in art history in 1951. She was a longtime resident of Bethesda, Md., before moving to Leisure World of Virginia in Leesburg in 2000. She was on the staff of the National Cathedral School in the 1970s and served as an election judge in Montgomery County during the 1960s and 1990s. Mrs. Carlson volunteered for many years at the National Museum of American Art. She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Leesburg and served on The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Francis Elliott Carlson. Mr. and Mrs. Carlson were active in the Appalachian Trail Club and served as trail supervisors for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. The children from her 20-year marriage to William Paul Stallsmith Jr. are Bruce Wagner Stallsmith of Huntsville, Ala. (Ruth); William Brooke Stallsmith of Arlington (Dana Kappler); Anne Lawrence Stallsmith of Roswell, Ga. (Ted Hazen); and Pamela Patricia Stallsmith of Richmond, Va. (Thomas Hohing). She has one grandson, Jesse Kappler Stallsmith of Arlington. She is survived by her brother, Robert Erskine Wagner of Aurora, Colo., and four stepchildren: Frank Carlson of Zurich, Switzerland; Julia Carlson of Cambridge, Mass.; Amelia Maddock of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and William Carlson of Potomac, Md., and five stepgrandchildren. Her sister, Mildred W. Nolan, died in 2002.

The memorial service will take place on Sat., Oct.13, at 3 p.m. at St. James' Episcopal Church, 14 Cornwall St. N.W., Leesburg, VA 20176. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James' Episcopal Church. Condolences may be sent to www.colonialfuneralhome.com.
