Obituary

Patrick John Cauley, of Winthrop, Massachusetts, formerly of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on the morning of August 17th, 2024, at the Virginia home of his beloved daughter. His passing was sudden and unexpected, but peaceful. He was 74 years old.

Patrick lived a full life, which started on May 24th, 1950, in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He was born to his loving parents, John Joseph Cauley, Jr. (retired LT. Col.) and Phyllis Julia (Howard) Cauley. Growing up in a military family, he spent his childhood traveling the world with his parents, three brothers and six sisters. Following his father's retirement from the military, this quintessential Irish Catholic family ultimately settled back in the Boston area.

Patrick was a proud graduate of Harvard University and UMass Amherst, where he earned his Master's and Bachelor's degrees. Among his other accomplishments, Patrick was a published author, writing The Irish Tammy. He was also a talented musician, who would often be found playing a tune on the piano and in his earlier years strumming his acoustic guitar and humming on his harmonica.

At the time of Patrick's passing, he was the owner and CEO of Affirmed Medical Services, which he founded in the early 1990's. In 2023, Patrick also assumed the Director of Operations role for another family-owned company, Safety Fit Inc., based in Massachusetts. Throughout his career, Patrick's eye for business, commitment to customer service, and natural charisma led him to form professional and even personal relationships that left a lasting impression.

Patrick was a larger-than-life personality, who was kind, generous, funny, and thoughtful. He touched many lives and acted as father, mother, brother, boss, and beloved friend. His door was always open to those that had nowhere to go, needed a place to sleep, had nothing to eat, or just needed someone to lend a sympathetic and encouraging ear. The cast of characters coming through his home, both in Massachusetts and Florida, and the banter and zaniness that followed would have given the Seinfeld characters a run for their money. Patrick himself was the master at sarcastic humor and had a perfect sense of comic timing.

Patrick was a strong, kind, loving and supportive father to his greatest successes, Dylan and Christine. His knowledge and guidance was the foundation of his family. As a single parent, Patrick embraced the challenges of raising two children on his own, demonstrating on a daily basis, how much they were loved and cherished. His love and support was unconditional and always unselfish. Dylan and Christine were Patrick's whole world–his sidekicks, the Abbott to his Costello, and always, his best friends. Of all his achievements, Patrick knew that "DAD" was his greatest role.

Patrick was blessed with four wonderful grandchildren. He lived vicariously through them by taking them to museums, swimming, building Legos, and enjoying walks along the beach. Through his love of music, Patrick was adamant that his grandsons learn to make and appreciate music. The four boys and Patrick enjoyed countless memorable trips together. He brought them much joy and happiness, and they did the same in return.

Patrick is survived by his daughter Christine Mapp, son-in-law Nick Mapp, four beautiful grandsons who were permanent fixtures by his side, nine siblings, their spouses, dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Patrick is preceded by his parents John and Phyllis Cauley, as well as his son Dylan Thomas Cauley, who was unequivocally his best friend.

We will miss Patrick dearly, but we are eternally grateful for the time we had with him. He will always be a presence in our hearts and memories. As Patrick prioritized finding joy in life and sharing it with others, the family asks that you do the same. In lieu of flowers or donations in his memory, live as Patrick did. Go out and do something that brings you real joy and share it with those around you. This is his legacy and gift, both to you and the ones you love.

We invite his family and friends to his future Celebration of Life where we will share happy memories, laugh, reminisce and toast the Goose. Please join us in Boston when we gather to remember a loving, caring man who enjoyed his time and life amongst us. Details to be provided at a later date.
