Obituary

Dr. Peter Chopivsky, 57, of Leesburg, Virginia passed away on April 19, 2010 after a heroic struggle against pancreatic cancer. He died at his home surrounded by his loving wife Ann and his four children, Katya, Maria, Lesya, and Peter, Jr.

Dr. Chopivsky was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1952 and he grew up in central Illinois where his father was a local family physician. After completing high school in suburban Chicago he attended Princeton University where he obtained his B.S. degree in biology in 1974. Dr. Chopivsky attended medical school at The George Washington School of Medicine where he graduated in 1978. After completing his residency at the University of California, Los Angeles, he was appointed a professor at the UCLA Medical School. He also practiced in a private family practice in Los Angeles.

While a student at The George Washington University School of Medicine he frequented Leesburg, attracted to the town by its rich history and its quaintness. He returned to Leesburg in 1990 and started a solo family practice, determined to practice modern medicine delivered the old fashioned way.

Dr. Chopivsky was committed to the Leesburg community and volunteered his time at the Loudoun Free Clinic. He was a medical provider at Graydon Manor. Dr. Chopivsky lectured on various artists and how their respective medical conditions affected their works in a series called Medicine and the Arts. He served on the board of the Harrison-Conrad Memorial Trust which offers financial assistance for the medical care of needy children with disabilities in Loudoun County. He was an avid supporter of and coach with the Central Loudoun Youth Basketball League. Dr. Chopivsky was also active in the medical communities of George Washington University and the University of Virginia by hosting and providing clinical rotations for those medical students who had an interest in family practice.

In addition to his wife Ann and his children, Dr. Chopivsky is survived by his brother George of Washington, DC, his brother Andrew of Reston, his sister Lydia of Washington, DC, three nephews and three nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. George and Sophia Chopivsky.

A service will be held 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21,2010 at the St. Andrews Ukranian Church, 15100 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20905. Father Steliac will be officiating. A time of visitation for family and friends has been set for Thursday, April 22, 2010 between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, VA 20176. Services will be held on Friday April 23rd at 12:00 PM at St. Andrews Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church, 281 Main Street, South Bound Brook, New Jersey 08880 and burial will be at the St. Andrews Cemetary.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at J.R.s Festival of Lakes between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
