In Loving Memory of Peter David Olexy
June 9, 1943 – June 3, 2023
Peter David Olexy, a beloved husband, father, brother, and respected member of the Washington legal community, peacefully passed away on June 3, 2023, one week shy of his eightieth birthday. Born on June 9, 1943, in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, Peter's life journey was marked by many achievements, personally and professionally, and the love and support of his family.
Peter's intellectual curiosity led him to pursue higher education at Penn State University, where he excelled academically and athletically. In 1965, he proudly graduated with honors with a chemical engineering degree, laying the foundation for his future professional success. While at Penn State, his natural talent for running and his dedication were rewarded with a scholarship on the track team. Shortly after graduation, Peter embarked on a new chapter in his life as he wed Sandra Leigh Hartman, his college sweetheart and wife of 57 years. Driven by a desire to expand his knowledge, Peter pursued a law degree at George Washington University. There, he demonstrated exceptional aptitude, graduating from law school with Order of the Coif honors, and embarking on a distinguished career in patent law. Peter's legal prowess earned him partnership at the Washington DC IP law firm Sughrue, Mion. With dedication and technical expertise, he honed his skills as a chemical patent attorney, leaving an indelible mark on the field. Over three decades, Peter built a robust practice, earning the respect and loyalty of colleagues and clients alike. His contributions to the legal community will be valued for years to come.
Peter was an avid fisherman, enjoying fly fishing trips with friends all over North America and sharing his love for deep sea fishing with his children and grandchildren. He and Sandy traveled the world, sharing amazing adventures together, and created priceless family memories with vacations to South Africa, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Florida Keys. Peter was a recognized audiophile, and enjoyed perfecting the quality of musical sound on his coveted stereo equipment. He loved listening to music, appreciating both rock and country music, as well as female vocalists of the 70s and 80s.
Peter is survived by his devoted wife, Sandy Olexy, who held his hand through life's triumphs and recent challenges. Their enduring love and her unwavering support were the bedrock of their remarkable life journey together. Peter will be deeply missed by his and Sandy's two daughters, Michele Bosch and Jennifer Herring, his sons-in-law, Ryan Bosch and Greg Herring, and their four grandchildren, Carter Bosch, Cassidy Bosch, Peyton Herring, and Jack Herring, all of whose lives were enriched by Peter's intellect, work ethic, support, and sense of humor. Peter is also survived by his brother, Francis Olexy of Raleigh, N.C., with whom he shared a lifelong bond.
