View Funeral Webcast

Sun Benevides was a very loving, dedicated military wife, grandmother, mother, mother-in-law, sister, daughter, best friend and partner. She passed on Wednesday the 18th of May 2022 at the Reston Hospital in Reston, Virginia, after suffering a catastrophic brain aneurysm at home.

Pong was born to Wang Ye Kang and In Kyu Han in Wonju, South-Korea. She was one of eight children. She was raised in South Korea alongside with her four brothers and three sisters on a farm following the Korean Confucianism principles until her father passed away when she was eleven.  Throughout her life in South Korea her family encountered multiple challenges. As a result, Pong had to work hard to survive by sharing multiple tasks on the farm with her brothers and sisters.  There was nothing she couldn't do. She excelled at everything she put her mind into. She was able to complete her school in South Korea, working on her Associate's, and getting her American citizenship.

Pong married Rui C. Benevides in August of 1976 and were blessed to have 46 years together. Together they shared two children, daughter, Nina Benevides-Gard and son, Dr. Rui Benevides.

Pong was a staunch conservative that strongly believed in the American way and its Constitution.  She wanted the best for her adopted country and grandchildren.  She understood the sacrifice of American soldiers and their families as she was one for 23 years.  She accompanied him on multiple assignments and supported the families under his command.  After her husband retired from the military service, she focused on her children's education goals and achievements.

Pong loved to take care of her husband, children, and grandchildren.   She enjoyed helping her husband in multiple home projects and investments.  She truly loved Korean dramas, finance news, political news, Korean cultural classic music, and cooking Korean dishes for her children.  Pong had a warm soul, had a selflessness to her, and strong intuition.  She was always right to the point and wanted her children and grandchildren to do well.

Pong was preceded in death by her father In Kyo, her mother Wang Ye, and two brothers In Sok and Yong Sok.  She is survived by her beloved husband Rui, daughter Nina, son Rui, grandchildren Koi, Kaioni, Jiraiya, Kaliani, and Koa, her three sisters, Pong Cha, Pong Hae, Pong Nam and two brothers, Chang Sok and Hyun Sok in Korea.

In lieu of flowers, our family deeply appreciates donations as a gift in honor or memory of Pong S. Benevides to the Wounded Warrior Project ( https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/Default.aspx?tsid=10043 ) and/or the Tunnel to Towers (t2t) ( https://t2t.org/donate/ ). Both organizations are non-profit. They assist the military veterans and families with military life challenges as a result of their job risks. These activities were close to Pong's heart.

Family and friends will gather together for a funeral service to honor Pong's life on Tuesday, 31 ^st May, 2022 at 18:00 at the Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, Virginia, to accommodate the Korean Time Zone and allow Pong's Korean family to observe it via a web cast.  The funeral will take place the next day on 1 ^st of June, 2022 at the Quantico National Cemetery at 11:00 AM, tentative in Section 32.

봉순 벤에비더스는 아주 사랑스럽고, 헌신적인 군인의 와이프 였으며, 할머니, 엄마, 시어머니, 언니, 딸, 최고의 친구이자 동반자 였습니다. 2022년 5월 18일 수요일 봉순은 집안에서 치명적인 뇌동맥류로 인해 고통을 받으시다 버지니아의 레스턴 병원으로 옮겨졌고, 세상을 떠나셨습니다.

봉순은 강왕래님과 한인교님의 자녀로 대한민국 원주에서 태어났습니다. 8명의 자녀 중 하나 였고, 11살에 아버지께서 세상을 떠나실 때 까지 한국의 유교사상에 따라 네 형제, 세 자매와 함께 농장에서 자랐습니다.

그녀의 한국의 생활 동안 봉순에게는 여러 도전적 상황을 마주해야 했습니다.

이러한 일들로, 봉순은 형제자매와 농장에서 여러가지 일들을 분담해 해 나가며 살아남기 위해 열심히 일을 해야만 했습니다.

그녀가 할 수 없는 일은 아무것도 없었습니다. 마음 먹은 모든일에 탁월했습니다.  봉순은 한국에서 관련된 일을 하며 학교를 마칠 수 있었고 이후, 미국 시민권을 취득할 수 있었습니다.

봉순은 1976년 8월 루이 C. 벤에비더스와 결혼하여 46년간을 축복 속에서 함께 했습니다. 둘 사이에는 딸, 니나 벤에비더스-가드와 아들, Dr. 루이 벤에비더스 이렇게 두 아이가 있었습니다.

봉순은 미국의 방식과 헌법을 굳게 믿고 따르는 확고한 보수주의자 였습니다.  그녀는 그녀의 제 2조국과 손자들을 위해 최고의 것들을 원했습니다. 23년 동안 한 사람으로서 미군과 그 가족의 희생을 이해했습니다. 그녀는 여러 일들을 남편과 함께 수행했고, 그의 지휘 하에 가족들을 서포트 했습니다. 봉순의 남편이 군에서 제대한 후 부터 그녀는 아이들의 목표와 성과들에 집중 했습니다.

봉순은 그녀의 남편과, 아이들 그리고 손주를 돌보는 일을 사랑했습니다. 남편을 도와 여러 집안일들과 투자에 도움을 주는 일을 좋아했고, 한국의 드라마, 연애, 정치뉴스, 한국의 문화적 전통 음악을 좋아하고, 아이들을 위해 한국음식을 차리는 일을 사랑했습니다. 봉순은 따스한 영혼과 이타심 그리고 직관력을 갖고 있었습니다. 그녀는 항상 옳았고, 자녀들과 손자들이 잘 되기를 바랐습니다.

봉순은 아버지이신 인교, 어머니이신 왕래, 그리고 두 남동생인 인석과 용석보다 먼저 돌아가셨습니다. 유족으로는 사랑하는 남편인 루이와 딸 니나, 아들 루이 그리고 손주 코이, 카이오니, 지라이야, 칼리아니 그리고 코아와 그녀의 세 자매들 보차, 봉해, 봉남과 두 남동생 창석과 현석이 한국에 있습니다.

봉순과 그녀의 남편은 군생활에 어려움을 겪고 있는 가족들과 참전용사들을 도와왔고, 이러한 행동들은 봉순의 마음 가까이에 있었습니다.

한국의 시간대를 반영하여 봉순의 한국가족이 웹캐스트를 통하여 같이 지켜볼 수 있도록 하기 위해 2022년 5월 31일 화요일 저녁 6시, 버지니아주 리스버그의 장례식장에서 가족과 친구들이 한자리에 모여 봉순의 삶을 기리는 장례식을 치르게 됩니다.

장례식은 다음날인 2022년 6월 1일 11시, 콴티코 국립묘지 32구역에서 거행될 예정입니다.
