Raymond Joseph Pluto (Captain, SC, USN, retired), 89, of Leesburg, VA passed away peacefully Saturday, September 5, 2015. He was born April 25, 1926 in DuBois , PA. son of the late Eva (Ferut) and Anthony Pluto. In 1943 he enlisted in the US Navy, was stationed at Naval Air Station, Olathe, Kansas and went on to have a distinguished career. He attended Missouri Valley College and Rice Institute in Texas, and received a BS in Naval Science. He received an MS from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He was the Supply Officer on the USS Merapi and the Commissary Officer on the USS Springfield. At the Army Food & Container Institute in Chicago he met his wife Carolyn Baldwin. In Great Lakes, Illinois he managed food processing and preparations for 10,000 galleys, feeding 100,000 recruits.
Later, he was responsible for world-wide food distribution to depots supplying the naval fleets. He established a mechanized account reporting system to facilitate the movement of food. At Fort Lee in Petersburg, VA he achieved the Distinguished Pistol Medal, and was the first Supply Officer to receive this gold medal. He received an invitation from the US Army to try out for the Olympics. In 1958 Ray managed the fuel tank farms at Guantanamo, Cuba and received the Secretary of the Navy Commendation Medal for his work there.
At the Ships Parts Control Center in Mechanicsburg, PA, Ray managed the Navy's largest computer site. He then moved to US Navy Headquarters, Washington DC as Chief of the Naval Material Management Information Center and developed an inventory control system for standardized reporting . He received the Meritorious Service Award Medal from Dept. of Defense. Ray retired as Captain, SC USN after 28 years in the Navy. He then went to work at Government Printing Service as Director of Data Processing for 22 years. He also served 34 years on the Board of Directors for Navy Federal Credit Union and as Chairman of the Information Systems Committee at the world's largest credit union. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 66 years Carolyn, his six children and nine grandchildren: Dianna Green and son-in-law Bill their children Aaron and Abby of Bethlehem, NH, Laura Murphy and son-in-law Liam and their sons Daniel & Brenden of Charlotte, VT, Valerie Sobel and son-in-law Jonathan and their sons David and Andrew of Portsmouth, NH, Mike Pluto and his wife Carin of Star, ID, Donna Johnson and her son Noah of Leesburg, VA, Patrick Pluto and his children Nicholas and Natalie of Leesburg, VA.
Ray will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery Spring 2016.
