Obituary

Raymund V Nolan, 89, went to be with the Lord on March 20, 2023 while residing at Heritage Hall in Leesburg, Virginia. Raymund was born in April 1933 in Houston, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John R Nolan and Alma M Nolan, brother John R Nolan Jr, and sister Carolyn N Pepping.

Raymund is survived by his wife of 61 years Lucille M Nolan of Annandale, VA, 2 daughters Carolyn Davis (John Davis) of Reston, VA, Janice Hermann (John Hermann) of Leesburg, VA and son Raymund Nolan Jr (Julie Nolan) of Cary, NC; his grandchildren Jannen Hermann of New York City, NY, Christian Hermann of Leesburg, VA, Karen Nolan, John Nolan, Audrey Nolan and Kevin Nolan all of Cary, NC; his brother Brooks Nolan (Kathy Nolan) of Heath, Texas; his sister-in-law Gloria Nolan (John R Nolan Jr-deceased) of Kankakee, Illinois as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A proud Texan throughout his life, it was never far from his heart. He thoroughly enjoyed growing up in Houston as well as spending time at the family cottage in Rockport along the gulf coast. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent a considerable amount of time hunting and fishing.

Raymund graduated from Lamar High School in Houston. He next attended the University of Houston studying electrical engineering with an ROTC scholarship. After college graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in the Signal Corps. Upon completion of his service, he moved to the Washington DC area and began to work at the National Security Agency where he was to spend nearly his entire career.

While working at NSA, he met Lucille and they were wed in Florida in 1961. A few years later with one child on hand and a second on the way, they moved from an apartment in Arlington, VA to their first, and only, house in Annandale, VA. They lived in the home for 57 years until health concerns meant that was no longer possible.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed taking his boat out on Chesapeake Bay to fish whenever he could. Family trips down to coastal South Carolina also featured much fishing and crabbing. He also enjoyed spending time with his many grand-puppies.

Raymund retired from the government in 1995 with over 40 years of federal service. He and Lucille were able to travel extensively out west during retirement. They had many wonderful trips and managed to eventually cover the entire west coast from Vancouver, British Columbia all the way down to Tijuana, Mexico; visit the Canadian Rockies, and take a Year 2000 cruise around Hawaii.

His electrical/mechanical skills were second to none and he was able to keep all of the family vehicles going all by himself. He had a 1968 Ford Falcon that he kept going and going. His desire was for the vehicle to go "to the moon and back" (500,000 miles). Sadly he had to throw in the towel around 466,000 miles. Rust finally defeated him, not the engine.

A short graveside service will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Friday March 31, 2023 at 12:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Raymund's honor may be sent to the American Diabetes Association or American Parkinson Disease Association .
