Obituary

Robert (Bob) Nathan Pass (March 27, 1944 – June 16, 2022)

Bob was born in Providence Rhode Island, attended East Providence High School followed by Brown University where he played collegiate tennis, graduating in 1966.  He went on to law school at George Washington University where he earned his JD.  After working as a trial attorney for the Federal Power Commission (now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) he left the practice of law to pursue his passion, tennis.

In 1973, Bob founded the 4Star Tennis Academy with just 12 girls at the Four Seasons Tennis Club in Merrifield, VA.  Under Bob's leadership the program grew, training thousands of USTA ranked boys and girls. The Pass Academy, renamed in his honor, will continue to live on by teaching the philosophies of tennis, and the dedication, passion, sportsmanship and humility that was Bob Pass.

In the words of one of his students, "Bob was a coach, but more than that, he was a mentor, friend, advocate and sage wiseman.  The rankings and wins were the outcome of his real passion – to teach us and mold us into good humans."

Bob achieved the honor of being elected in to the Middle Atlantic Tennis Association (now USTAMAS) Hall of Fame for his coaching and his program was given the national award of USTA Developmental Program of the Year. Bob was also awarded the UST Maryland District "Maury Schwartsman" Award for Player Development. Over the course of his career, he served as the Director of Tennis at the Four Seasons Tennis Club, Riverbend Country Club, Edgemore Club, Landon School, Georgetown Preparatory School, and coach of the girls' varsity tennis team at Bullis School.

With his daughter Hannah Pass Butler, son-in-law Greg Butler, grandchildren Charlie and Eileigh Butler, sister Linda Pass Armstrong, his nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and countless pros and students he leaves a legacy of kindness, generosity, fairness, philanthropy and opportunity for all those who love the sport of tennis.

A memorial service for Bob is being planned for this Fall.
