Obituary

Robert W. Furr, Sr., 74 years of age, known to all as "Tuffy", died Monday, November 21, 2011, a victim of cancer. He was born in 1937, the son of Forrest Furr and his beloved mother, Lucy. He attended both Leesburg Elementary and Leesburg High School and Loudoun County High School graduating in 1957. While in high school, he played on the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams and was the center on the undefeated 1954 football team. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army and upon completion of his service, returned to Leesburg and gained employment with the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Commission, while also studying to be a barber – a profession he continued until his death. He was also known as an expert horseman and bred, trained and raced on steeplechase and flat tracks in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. An article in the Washington Post about racing included a statement that credited him as having an encyclopedic mind when it came to racing bloodlines.

He is survived by four sons, Darrell, Channing, Christopher and Robert. Other family members include his brother, Forrest "Foxy" Furr, and four grandchildren, Hunter, Peyton, Sarah and Dillon. Tuffy was predeceased by a son, Stevie.

A visitation for family and friends has been scheduled for Monday, November 28, 2011 between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road NE, Leesburg, Virginia 20176.
