IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rosemary (Teeny)
Kathleen Murphy Zugel
February 18, 1932 – December 23, 2021
Rosemary (Teeny) Kathleen Murphy Zugel, 89, of Washington D.C., passed away on December 23rd.
Rosemary was born in Washington D.C. on February 18th, 1932 to John and Mary Ellen Murphy of Galway, Ireland. She grew up on Capitol Hill where she attended St. Joseph's Elementary School and Immaculate Conception High School.
After graduation, she studied at George Washington University for two years then worked for the United States Government in the Selective Service Department .
In 1958, she married Francis (Skip) Kopp Zugel. Together they had four daughters and raised them in Potomac, Maryland. They were long-time parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy Church.
As the youngest of 11 children, Teeny spent her childhood summers at North Beach, Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay. There she developed a lifelong love for the beach. In 1970 she was instrumental in making sure her children also became beach lovers by being one of the first to buy a house in The Bethany Beach community of Bethany West. Her family is eternally grateful as this house has provided over 50 years of the happiest memories for the family that continue to this day.
Though officially a "housewife", Rosemary had always been an avid reader and was
constantly up to date on world events. And her common sense and quick Irish wit could
routinely outmatch more formally educated professionals. But her family was her greatest joy and she loved them greatly. She was a supporter of her children in their sports throughout their school years despite never learning the rules of the game, as well as an attentive and loving grandmother while still proclaiming herself to be "not a game kind of people."
Rosemary will be remembered most for her sense of humor, her love of sweets, a fondness of indoor luxury, and her inability to mask her opinions by her facial expressions. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
Rosemary is predeceased by her parents, her siblings and her husband, Skip. She is survived by her four daughters, Rosemary Zugel, Jeanmarie Zugel Smith, Marianne Zugel and Ellenmarie Zugel (Malcolm); her grandchildren, Courtney Smith Gaffney and Ryan Smith; her greatgrandchildren Quinn and Max Gaffney, and her many nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery and a Memorial Mass will be held and announced at a later date.
