Obituary

Rumsey S. Light, Jr, 88, lifelong Loudoun County farmer, passed away peacefully January 21 at his home in Aldie. He was born on May 28, 1936 in Leesburg, Virginia , son of the late Rumsey S. and Belva E. Light. Raised on the family farm, Rumsey graduated from Osbourn High School in 1955, excelling in sports in football and baseball. His high school batting average was .447, setting an unbroken record. He continued with baseball, playing center field for Arcola in the popular Loudoun County Baseball League during the 1950's.

He was known as innovative but practical in his farming methods and a hard worker all his life.  Rumsey was a promient member of the Loudoun and Virginia dairy farm industry for decades. His "Light-Ridge" Registered Holstein prefix was well known for the quality and production of the dairy cattle bred and raised under that name. After the final successful dairy dispersal sale on March 30, 1993, he switched to the slighty slower pace of raising beef cattle and hay for sale. Rumsey was pleased and honored when the new local high school chose the name Light Ridge when it opened in 2020. Rumsey had been a member of the Maryland Virginia Milk Producers Association, Director of the Virginia State Dairyman's Association and a Director of the County and State Holstein Asssociations. He also served on the Board of Farm Credit and later helped with the establishment of the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum and served for a time on its board after the museum opened.

Besides Registered Holsteins Rumsey also enjoyed racing thoroughbred horses from the 1950's into the 1970's in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia but mostly in nearby Charles Town.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Bernadette A. Light, his son Rumsey S. Light, III, (Lisa) of Purcellville,  sister Sylvia Hook of Michigan City, IN, brother Meredith 'Kim' Light of Aldie, five grandchildren, Samantha Light Frye, (James) of Gainesville, VA, Zachary Light of Yorktown, VA, Emma Catherine Light of Boston, MA, Charles and Jack Hagen of Charlotte, NC,  an uncle, Galen Ellison (Pat) of Marshall, VA, two nieces, two nephews, many cousins, and many friends. His daughter, Mary Bernadette Light Hagen predeceased him in 2006. The family gratefully thanks Blue Ridge Hospice and CEM Homecare for their excellence in care during the past year.

Condolences may be sent to Bernadette A. Light. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum, 21668 Heritage Farm Lane, Sterling, Virginia 20164.
