Obituary

Russell Thomas Johnson, Jr., 79, born on February 22, 1942, in Baltimore, MD, passed away on January 21, 2022 at Inova Loudoun Hospital due to complications from his longtime battle with cancer. He will be celebrated at a family-only gathering on Monday, January 31, 2022, at 1:00 pm at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, VA. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in the spring; time and date to be announced.

Known to family and friends as Russ, Tom, Pop, or Pop-Pop, Russ was a handsome, accomplished, well-spoken man.  Always free with a kind word, he was a born gentleman, but would surprise you with a mischievous twinkle in his eye when the mood struck. He shared a generous and genuine servant's heart, unreservedly, with family, friends, and strangers alike.

He grew up in Essex, MD and graduated from Kenwood High School, where he met Penelope Condos, his Penny, and married her in 1964.  He graduated with a degree in Economics from Shepherd University, where he served as President of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity from 1964-1966. After college, Russ embarked on a rewarding career, quickly rising through the ranks from sales, sales management to senior executive roles where he was responsible for capturing and managing large telecom and IT contracts in the defense and intelligence space with the Federal Government. His journey encompassed roles with IBM, Xerox, Western Union, BBN, GTE/Telenet, Contel and CSC.

Together Russ and Penny inspired two wonderful sons, who went on to marry and give "Pop and Gigi" 4 grandchildren, who found themselves adored and spoiled. He was very much looking forward to meeting his great grandchild soon.

After retiring from the corporate world, both Russ and Penny applied their skills in the residential real estate industry until they decided to call it a career. In retirement, Russ spent his days as a starter and marshal for Trump National Golf Club and Lansdowne Resort Golf Club – a perfect role for a man who was always genial and engaging.

He is survived by his beloved Penny, their two sons, Russell (Barbara) Johnson and Erik (Dawn) Johnson, their 4 grandchildren, Brad, Max, Derek and Keira, and his siblings: Carolyn Johnson, Kathryn Gatzke, Glenn Johnson, Elizabeth Campbell, and Eileen Cassell.

He is preceded by his parents, Russell and Glenna Johnson.
