Obituary

Sally Kathryn McMurray (Age 88)

Sally Kathryn McMurray died of leukemia on February 14, 2016, in Ashburn, Virginia. Born in Watertown, New York in 1927, she was the daughter of the late Katharine Martin Deming and stepdaughter of the late Frank Martin.

She met her husband, Raymond Doughty McMurray, when he returned from serving in the Army in Germany during World War II and while both were students at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. They married in 1948, and first settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where her husband attended Harvard Law School and Sally worked as a technical editor at the then-newly established Lincoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As part of her work at the Lab, Sally was cleared to assist in publishing top secret reports to develop and design for the U.S. military command a pioneering air defense system against a growing threat from the Soviet Union.

During their marriage, Sally and her husband also lived in Cincinnati, Ohio and West Caldwell, New Jersey, before settling in Potomac, Maryland in 1971. In New Jersey, Sally received her Masters in Education and for several years taught high school classes in American history. While living in Potomac, Sally served as the first woman Senior Warden of St. Francis Episcopal Church, the Founder and Chairman of the Board of St. Francis Episcopal Day School, as well as the founder of several of the Church's community outreach programs.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband in 1983, after 35 years of marriage. In 1992, Sally moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, where she continued to pursue her love of world travel, American history and gardening. In 2013, she returned to the Washington area to be nearer to her family, moving to Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia.

She is survived by two children, Christopher McMurray, President of McMurray Dispute Resolution, Inc., of Alexandria, Virginia, and Claudia McMurray, a former Assistant Secretary of State, of Great Falls, Virginia, as well as two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2016.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends to consider a contribution in the name of Sally K. McMurray to St. Francis Episcopal Church in Potomac, Maryland, or to the Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter, Fairfax, Virginia.
