IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Samuel Everhart
Stalcup
October 15, 1947 – May 22, 2024
Samuel Everhart Stalcup of Reston, Virginia passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on May 22, 2024 after eight years of declining health. He was 76 years old.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, William G. Stalcup and Caroline Stalcup; three of his siblings, George Stalcup, Gail Varley, and Dana Stalcup; sister-in-law Maria Stalcup and brother-in-law David Goddard. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betsy, along with his three children Anna Pizzo (Dan), Samuel Everhart Stalcup Jr, and Sarah Fangmeyer (Benjamin) and two grandchildren, Anika and Pema, and many nieces and nephews. Sam is also survived by two brothers, William G. Stalcup Jr. (Diane) and Phillip Stalcup (Mickie), and two sisters, Sharon Goddard and Lina Cahan (David).
Sam grew up in the Chesterbrook area of McLean along with his seven siblings, many cousins and family members, most of whom lived on the same road. Growing up, Sam helped his family farm vegetables in the spring and summer, as well as sell Christmas Trees each winter.
Sam graduated from McLean High School in 1966. He pursued his higher education while also serving as a cook in the National Guard. He got two Bachelor's degrees from George Mason, one in Business and then later in Computer Science. He spent his career as a Software Engineer, working at the State Department with Northrop Grumman in his final years before retirement.
Sam was raised Catholic but struggled with his faith as a young adult. After ending up in the hospital at age 32, a visitor to another patient in his same room explained how one could invite Jesus into his heart and be saved. Sam decided to follow God and was forever changed. Sam was a passionate worshiper of God who lived a joyful life in Christ.
He met his wife Betsy when she left California for a year of geology work in Reston. Love took him west, and he married her and lived in California for five years before returning to his extended family in the Washington DC area. Sam's playful and gentle spirit made him beloved by all who knew him.
Sam was an exuberant, loving, larger-than-life character who enjoyed chatting and telling jokes to anyone he encountered. He continued to plant tomatoes and help with the Stalcup's Vegetable Stand in Chesterbrook with his own kids. He was an avid sports fan for the Washington Commanders, Nationals, and Capitals. At the end of October, he would begin playing Christmas music and (over)decorating every room in the house for Christmas. He dressed up as Santa, Father Christmas, and St Nicholas, never needing a pillow under his coat until his final years.
He was heartily involved in his church community at Church of the Apostles for more than 30 years. He came alongside Betsy and was immersed in the work of Healing Center International. He brought his light-hearted fun and warm empathy to their daily zoom community Daily Connect. He was beloved by many and will be terribly missed.
Sam's funeral will be held on Tuesday May 28th at 11am at Galilee United Methodist Church, 45425 Winding Rd. Sterling, Virginia. Reception to follow. Sam will be buried Wednesday at 10:30am at Union Cemetery in Leesburg.
