IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sherie S.
Grimes
November 30, 1929 – December 14, 2019
After a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease, Sherie-Nan Sherwood Grimes, at 90 years, passed away on December 14, 2019 in Frederick, Maryland. She passed on peacefully in her sleep lovingly surrounded by family.
Sherie was born on November 30, 1929 to Clayton Benjamin Sherwood and Nan McCabe Laycock Sherwood in Washington, DC. After graduating from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, Sherie began a career as a secretary at the law firm of Warren Whyte Grimes, who would later become her father-in-law.
On July 29, 1950 she was joined in marriage to Robert Camp Grimes in Washington, DC after his return from service in the U.S. Army. They shared 46 years celebrating life together until Robert's passing on March 9, 1996.
She is survived by her three children, Warren Sherwood Grimes and wife Penelope Grimes, Julianne Miller, and Marianne Hill. Her grandchildren, Michelle Nan Williams and husband Zachary Williams, Jennifer Laura Smith and husband Michael Smith, Peter John Anselmo and wife Naomi Anselmo, Jason John Hill and wife Lauren Hill, Zachary Nathan Anselmo and wife Caitlin Anselmo, and Chad Robert Hill, and step-grandchildren Lara Carter and husband J. Warren Carter, and Scott Westcamp. Great-grandchildren, Ryan Williams, Evan Williams, Cecilia Smith, Israel Anselmo, Paschelle Anselmo, Victoria Anselmo, Salvador Anselmo, and Avonlea Anselmo, and step-great-grandchildren Audrey Carter, James Carter, and Lindsey Carter.
Through her life, Sherie was a creative soul. She enjoyed several hobbies. She loved to sew, whether it was Halloween costumes, or outfits for her children, she loved being a creator. She even crafted a beautiful wedding dress for her daughter Marianne. Writing stories was another way she showed her creativity. She penned her stories on her manual typewriter and loved reading them to her grandchildren. She had a green thumb and cherished early morning quiet time tending to her flowers and gardening. The gift of a beautiful voice was hers, and all were blessed to hear her sing, which was her favorite thing to do while washing the dinner dishes each evening. She was also an avid reader and truly had a self-proclaimed love affair with books. Her passion was endless. She called books her friends and felt she had seen and explored the whole world through her readings and imagination. Perhaps her greatest joy may have been painting. As a talented artist, she enjoyed her watercolors, charcoal sketches, acrylics and oil painting. She had a great interest in the field of medicine and the study of languages. She was a selfless and loving caregiver to her husband, mother, and mother-in-law.
Sherie was a quiet soul, with a gentle spirit. Always with a watchful eye to help others wherever she could. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a very kind and caring giver with a tender heart of gold. She was selfless, perhaps to a fault and always chose to see the very best in everyone. Never was she to utter an unkind word. Her positive peaceful nature was a gift to all she encountered. She will be deeply missed.
To honor Sherie, a service will be held on Friday, December 27 at 10:30 AM at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road, NE, Leesburg, VA 20176. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, also in Leesburg. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sherie's name would be most appreciated to the Alzheimer's Association, the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center of Frederick and Hospice of Frederick County for their loving care and support of our mother.
