In Loving Memory of Signe Birgit Stannard,

Signe Birgit Stannard, known affectionately as Birgit, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Ashburn, Virginia on December 16, 2023 at the age of 94. She was born in Karlstad, Sweden to Ernst and Signe Petersson on May 5, 1929. After highschool, Birgit traveled around Europe and met her future husband, Gerald Stannard, on a U.S. military base in France where he was stationed as a soldier and she worked as a civilian in the bookkeeping office. The two were married in France and welcomed their first son, Michael Stannard, there as well. Eventually, the Stannard family settled in Syracuse, NY where Birgit welcomed two more sons and worked for 35 years in the Admissions Office at Community General Hospital.

Birgit's life was a testament to love and grace. She was a woman of deep principles, whose values of kindness, generosity, and humor touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was defined by love for family, a deep pride in her Swedish heritage, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Birgit is survived by her sons, Robin and Erik Stannard; daughter-in-law Maria Stannard; grandchildren Halie (William) Mitchell, Donovan Stannard, and Shelby Stannard; and great grandchildren, Mason and Jack Mitchell. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Stannard; her eldest son Michael (Maria) Stannard; her sister, Barbro Petersson; and many beloved friends. While we mourn the loss of her physical presence, we celebrate the enduring impact her gentle spirit had on our lives.

Birgit will be laid to rest next to her late husband Gerald in Syracuse, NY in the spring. The Stannard family expresses deep gratitude for the support and condolences received during this difficult time. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
