Stephanie McGovern completed her last shift, unafraid and with an open heart, on August 8, 2026. A nurse, wife, mother, daughter, sister, dog mom and friend, Stephanie had warmth, curiosity, and quick wit that drew people to her before they even knew why. In her life, she trusted God with the big picture and handled the details herself. She crafted a life that honored her faith and the messy, ordinary and beautiful details that, together, are the measure of a life, well-lived.

Stephanie is survived by her husband, Kevin; her son, Ryder, whom she called Squiggy; her bonus son, Jackson; her parents, Herk and Connie Hubbard; her sister and brother in law, Melanie and Eric Grecek; her niece and nephew, Bella and Braden Grecek, her mother and father in law Jim and the late Kathy McGovern, her brother in law, Mark McGovern; her brother and sister in law Steve and Jaime Sheggrud; her niece and nephew, Adley and Jameson, all of whom she loved fiercely.

Stephanie grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Westmont High School. She earned her first Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and, several years later, earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Shenandoah University in Virginia.

Stephanie was devoted to nursing and driven by a genuine passion to serve and support others. Her own life experiences led her to the profession, and they shaped the way she practiced. Over the course of her career, Stephanie held many nursing roles, but her favorite was the time she spent as a nurse at the Loudoun detention center. It was challenging and unpredictable work that called for compassion, sound judgment, patience, and resilience. It was also where she perfected her jailhouse sense of humor, using her quick wit to connect with people, ease difficult moments, and get through the hardest days. Stephanie sought demanding cases and cared for the patients others might have shied away from. She believed every person deserved dignity, regardless of condition or circumstance. That belief was not simply a professional value she adopted. It was who she was. It may have been in this role where Stephanie may have lived her faith the loudest, bringing a deep sense of humanity and compassion to those who needed it most.

Her relationship with Kevin began with a picture of a pretty girl and her chocolate Lab, Cooper. Soon after, Kevin and Stephanie, married in a beautifully uncomplicated ceremony in a local park. In 2009, Ryder entered this world. As a mother, Stephanie knew how to hold laughter, worry and hope in the same hand. Watching Ryder grow into the young man he is today was the joy of her life. She celebrated his every accomplishment and cheered him on from the stands at every baseball game. She crafted a life centered on family and friends, two more dogs, Saylor (the good dog) and Ripley (who never listened to her).

Stephanie made her home in Leesburg, Virginia, with regular trips to visit family in Pennsylvania and vacations in Ocean City, Maryland, and the Outer Banks. She loved the beach, especially sitting on a dock surrounded by the smell of low tide and boat exhaust, sipping a drink and listening to music. She loved the sunrise and a Layton’s doughnut. A devoted Pittsburgh sports fan, she remained immune to Kevin's efforts to make her an Eagles fan and, over the years, became a devoted Navy fan. Along the way, she introduced Kevin to IC Light.

Stephanie filled her life with the people and things she loved. She baked constantly, shared what she made with everyone, and was just as happy to enjoy it herself. She ran races for the simple joy of finishing them and made friends easily wherever she went. She never let a dentist visit go uncelebrated, keeping a spirited scorecard with Melanie over whose smile had fewer cavities, a rivalry that captured how much fun Stephanie found in life's smallest moments.

You noticed Stephanie because of her smile. She handed out her smile like it was hers to give away as often as she wanted. It was, and she did, and the world is better for it. You stayed because of her heart. She leaves a family and a legacy built on dignity, joy, and love given without reservation.
