Stephen Joseph Pirato, Sr., 70, of McLean, VA and Duck, NC, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023.
Born to Julius and Anna, Steve spent his childhood in Drexel Hill, PA with his two siblings ingrained in the Italian American culture. Steve became a dedicated Eagles fan early on, igniting a lifelong love of football. As a teen, he attended Monsignor Bonner Catholic High School where he tested the priests' patience and claimed to have had a standing Saturday detention all four years. Steve continued his education by earning an accounting degree from Temple University.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Edith "Edie" Stratton Pirato; sons, Stephen Pirato Jr. (Megan), Leesburg, VA and Daniel Pirato (Sao), Springfield, VA; grandchildren Lena, Jules, and Adi; mother, Anna Mettimano Pirato, Newtown Square, PA; siblings Joann Florio (Joe), Springfield, PA and Vincent Pirato (Ali), Mukilteo, WA; and many cousins and aunts.
Having spent his entire career in the restaurant industry, Steve started flipping burgers when he was 14 years old and continued working whatever position was necessary throughout his college years. Over this time, he realized he preferred the operations side of the business and transitioned to management which took him and his family from Pennsylvania to Virginia, Texas, and California, for various casual and fine dining concepts.
Steve enjoyed traveling with his family and friends and in recent years had the opportunity to experience Italy, the British Isles, the Baltic Sea, the Bahamas, and Spain. Steve's day-to-day activities, which always commenced with early morning walks through the neighborhood, included hunting in Pennsylvania with his brother-in-law, Eddie Stratton, and friends, golfing in North Carolina, frequent poker nights, and attending as many of his granddaughters' athletic events as he could. Steve, affectionately referred to as "Bob" by Lena, Jules and Adi, was an unending source of laughter for his granddaughters. Watching them grow and develop into their own brought him immense joy.
Steve's legacy will be forever treasured for the wisdom, humor, and values he inspired in his family. He lived a rich life, and his impact, both in his professional and personal endeavors, will be felt for generations to come. Fly Eagles Fly.
A funeral mass will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, VA on November 2nd at 9:30 AM. A visitation will precede the mass from 9-9:30 AM in the fellowship hall. Please consider wearing a touch of blue, Steve's favorite color. A luncheon will follow at Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar in Tysons Corner. All are welcome.
A private burial will take place in Pennsylvania at a later date.
