Steven Howard Lee Honett, 77, of Lovettsville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 7:35 p.m. at the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Hospital in West Virginia, after a season of compassionate care there while living with lung cancer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane Honett, and his five daughters: Jennifer Fischer (Shiloh), Elizabeth Bell (Bob), Emily Bacon (Eric), Sarah Jane Brock (Mark), and Stephanie Flower (Tyler). He also leaves behind 30 cherished grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren!
Steve is further survived by his brother, Stanley Honett (Sandy), and his three sisters: Sheryl Magelssen (the late Paul Magelssen), Sharleen Trantham (Mark), and Shirley Foust (Eric).
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christina Honett; his parents, Irene Betty Surbaugh Honett and Howard Lee Honett; and his brother-in-law, Paul Magelssen; and by his mother-in-law Marion Smith Vine Metzger and father-in-law Walter James Metzger and brother-in-law James Metzger.
Steve was born on April 30, 1948, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Irene and Howard Honett. He spent most of his youth in Wisconsin, where he was actively involved in his church and various ministry organizations. While attending Taylor University (Indiana), he met his wife, Jane Metzger, and they were married in 1970. He later attended Valparaiso Law School (Indiana) and was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps, serving as a Captain and JAG officer.
In 1979, Steve and Jane moved to Texas, where he established a private law practice. They raised their five daughters in Plano, where Steve remained deeply involved in church life—leading Bible studies and ministering to many families. He was known for his deep love for Jesus and for gently sharing the gospel with those around him.
From boyhood, Steve loved farm life—a passion he carried into adulthood. He taught his children how to care for animals, raise chickens (in their suburban backyard) and even milk a cow (within a mile of their home) in Plano, Texas. He had a special affection for God’s creation and a natural gift for gardening.
Due to a long and difficult battle with mental illness, Steve was separated from his loved ones for many years. In God’s grace, his family was reunited with him in recent years in Lovettsville, Virginia, where he was able to enjoy farm life once again. These years brought meaningful reconnection and healing.
Following a fall, Steve was transferred to the VA hospital, where it was discovered the cancer he had battled years earlier had returned and spread.
Though his life included both hardship and joy, his family finds deep comfort in the faithfulness of God throughout it all. They are especially grateful for the faith in Christ that Steve and Jane instilled in their children—a legacy that continues to this day.
We will be reminiscing and honoring Steven Honett: husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, VA, 9 June 2026, @11 am. Lunch will be provided before a burial service at Arlington National Cemetery @3 pm.
